Buggy Software

I think it's time for the consumer to stand up and stop taking garbage from software companies. I'm not really sure what set me off, maybe all the news about companies suing everybody for copyright violations, but damn, maybe if the software companies produced quality products, they wouldn't have the piracy problems they have. It a bunch of crap to pay what can be a lot of money, and then not have the product work the way it should. You get update after update and the thing still doesn't work right. Then they start yelling about warez and the amount of money they are losing, and I think, no, you're not losing money, you're just getting what you should for the garbage you are trying to sell. I'm done. Thank you.

Just to chime in, the thing that frustrates me increasingly is when you purchase a legal license for software and then find that it has very little enduring value: the software vendor is only offering software updates -- even for critical fixes -- for a year. Some companies offer subscription renewals at a discount, while others do not. Not all vendors are transparent in their revealing the terms of renewal policies, and a not a few software companies have changed their policies on-the-fly. Moreover, after a few years, unless you have carefully retained the original install package, you may find that the manufacturer no longer offers access to download the program you have purchased.

I can understand why a company that sells antivirus software, which requires constant and immediate updates in perpetuity, would demand a subscription. I don't see how a firewall or dvd-player producer can legitimize the same level of ongoing investment from customers. If we are to acknowledge the integrity of software copyright, then it's continuing value must be acknowledged by the producer as well as the consumer.
