Broadband help...

I have been having major problems....with my bb connection...well...it is better,thankfully !!

But...(always a but...lol) I can't change the MTU....I have downloaded DRTCP, but this still hasn't set the value of 1500....I keep re-doing tests and the MTU is coming back as 1300...

I have changed the RWIN ok, with no problems, been to PC PitStop, DSLReports and the like, but still getting a slow connection problem

It has gone up from 33k to 450k...but I would like to make the most of what I am paying for....this making sense !!!!

My connection is with freeserve 512kbps (think it is!!) copperjet ADSL modem....running on winxp..

Any help much appreciated !!!

Thanks

u really need to use some sort of download manager such as flashget with multiple threads/jets to draw the full or near full potential of your bandwith :)

33k sounds about right

it also depends on what you are using/getting with it or where from !?

if you are using kazza and multiple sources are sharing then your bandwith will be maxed out or near as dammit :)

or a fast IRC server will give better speeds :)

Where as a singlefile unless the server is fast then it could almost grind to a halt :(

I find for big files 34k is more the norm speed for a single download seems sucky but compared to a 3k a second for dialup be greatful :)

but you will technically never achieve 450k for a single file unless the source is ultra fast !?

an example is BERTIEG here is on 2mb cable/dsl but i would doubt he gets a full 2mb transfer more about 1.5 ish :)

im sure he can add to this as will many other dsl users here :)

If it's the connection rate you want to alter you can also do it by editing the registry, checkout Here
I have tried that....not of this page, but the same thing...but...it still won't stick...if you know what I mean !!!!!! It keeps re-setting it self to 1300...I am totally baffled why it is doing this, as the RWIN can be changed easily enough...

lol...i changed my mtu to 1458 by editing the registry and it has stayed at that value....not sure what else to suggest m8, xp usually sets it to 1500 by default

Thats what I can't understand....I have done god knows how many tests, for the last several days (thats where I have been!!) and still can't get it to stay...I have re-done what you suggested and re-booted so will do another test in a min...fingers crossed it will have kept the values this time!!!!!!

God...I love my computer :p lol

Are you pingable? I know it says become pingable, but I were and kept getting the same error !!! You want to also download the DRTCP as this can change the MTU & RWIN for most any how (just me I think!!)

Do you know how to become pingable? (if you are not already !!) It is on the same site you have done your test...

Should have added...If you are not sure how to become pingable, follow the link on your tweak test page or here http://www.dslreports.com/faq/tweaks
Scroll down and you will see the answer...lol...if I remember from what I did, I had to re-boot my comp, for the changes to happen...(even though it took till I went to PC PitStop) lol

I am purposely unpingable m8, my firewall is in stealth mode ;)
lol...but...I would say make your self pingable just for the tests, then you can change it back....this way you will get a better test & imput, if there is anything wrong....[/COLOR]

I will second that.....if you wanna check it on one file....Try for example to download linux iso....I know that Mailman(guy from other forum)was getting around 1100 k from there ftp--no joke.......But really to max your connection--very hard???I got basic 1.1 dsl and still i have a problem to max it out :)

lol i only did the test to show that i had altered my mtu...the last time i did these tests was over a year ago when i first got broadband ;) i gave up then trying to max it out lol

My cable conx in the US is:
http://monitor.dslreports.com/tweak/block:356620e?service=cable&speed=300&os=winXP&via=normal

XP SP1 has the correct MTU, not RWIN. Have used Customizer XP to enable MTU auto-discovery, set TTL to 128, enable large TCP window support, and optimize the Windows TCP/IP window size. Left optimize MTU size OFF (default is 1500).

Maybe you used a tweaker to change the MTU?

I too am one of the Unpingables (Elliot Ness, eat your heart out). My Linksys uses SPI to keep out the bad guys, and ZoneAlarm chimes in to help.
