Best Way To Burn This?

I need some advise here, i capture movies from satelite and turn them into vob files and use dvdshrink, clonecd etc,to be able to burn to dvd ,problem is a 1 hour 34 min movie is 5.5 gig ,so i use one of the above programs and make dvd , quality not bad,but a 3 hour movie is 9 gig and by the time you compress it down the quality is gone, unless you split to 2 dvd's which i do not wan't to, any ideas out there? Chickenman how would you do this in your DVD Tutorial??

My guess, capture to a BIG HD in lossless or low compression, and encode directly to the required bitrate using a good encoder. Shrinking is a lot quicker than re-encoding, but takes shortcuts - so the best way is to use a minimum of lossy compression (or none at all, but the source has already passed through a lossy step), and then drive straight for the final compressed result - this holds good for sound, video or images (MP3, MPEG, JPEG) - the fewer lossy processing steps, the better.

Well if the satellite is digital then the MPEG2 would be lossless, assuming direct digital capture of the transport stream.

I agree though, try encoding with CCE instead of using DVDShrink, etc. You may also want to filter the source if there is any noise, etc.

If the quality still isn't good enough and you don't want to split then the only real option is to try encoding at half instead of full res.

How do you do the capture, as a DVB file ? If so just folow the DVD to DVDR tute but in Misc Tab, select DVB not DVD. If you capture to AVI (Huffyuv codec + PCM audio is good) then just use the AVI to DVDR Tute. If you capture to MPEG2, then use VFAPI to make a pseudo AVI file from it and follow the AVI to DVDR Tute.

End result is 1 capture, then 1 encode direct to DVDR size VOB files ready to burn.

How do you use this VFAPI ,i found a free copy at vcd help and it is a reader, i found nothing on this program that says how to convert to a pseudo file ,i captured in mpeg 2.

I wouldn't recommend using VFAPI. Using AVISynth/MPEG2Dec3 will be faster and give you better quality. That is assuming that you are encoding with CCE and not TMPGEnc.

You can use ffVFW's makeAVIS to create an AVI from an AVISynth script or seeing as how most versions of CCE accept AVS files as input, just open the AVS directly.

That said, to use VFAPI you need to install the reader and then use the other program to create the pseudo AVI from a D2V file or I guess directly from MPEG2 if you have the mpeg2 VFAPI plugin installed.
