Best Dual Layer DVD-R/+R Burning Drive

Just hope that the rumors that NEC 35x0 drives will get PIE/PIF scanning abilities (something my friend desperately needed, but could not do). Something tells me it may only be the 3540 and later, but it would be nice to test my media for burn quality.

Next version of CDSpeed will support Nec PIE/PIF scanning...

At first I thought he was crazy. But after a few tests like PIE/PIF scanning with the same media TY01 and TY02 media, I was suprised that the Plex burned with almost the same high quality on the TY02 and better on the TY01. Mind you we had to do these tests on his burner as the NEC does not have this ability. You ever try an Aopen DVD 1648/AAP PRO ($26 USD) for doing ripping and scaning? The one I bought was a retail box with 3 different color faces. Fastest riper and does the scans without a problem. I can ripp a
DVD9 (7,597,844,480 bytes) in 10:26, six minutes faster than my Lite-on HD166S. It was a sad day when I had to let my Liteon go. :( The only thing I don't like as of yet DVDInfoPro doesn't support it yet but they just add DUW1608 DVD burner so its just a matter of time.
Anyway good luck with what ever you buy. :)

I heard that... elsewhere, but didn't some drives need a little finessing from firmware updates?

My NEC 3500 is simply gorgeous, so I guess 3520 is even better... or not?

ATM,the 3500 is still better......athough Liggy and Dee are working on the 3520 firmware too...

It used to be,but I think it's not the case anymore.....the testing software developers mostly add support these days....

The 3500 is still considered in many circles to be the best DVD burner out there at this time. We'll see what happens with the 3540, but I'm thinking the 3500 is gonna be in the hall of fame of great burners.

Good to know... looking forward to it then.

As we are speaking of NEC 3500 firmwares... what are you 3500 owners using? My friend flashed mine with a modified firmware before I aquired it.I'm looking for quality burning, rather than speed. It's burning fine with TY01 and TY02 media... which I mostly use. Perhaps I should leave alone... suggestions ?!

I use Liggy and Dee latest,V2.TB RC2 to speed up some low-speed discs... :D
But there's a new, official NEC firmware out from yesterday:

http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3500.html
Perhaps I'm gonna try that too, while I'm waiting for a new Liggy&Dee version which is based on that new official firmware... :p :D
Turns out this one doesn't supports PI/PIF testing.:(
I read this at freaks.
Unfortunately it seems that PI/PIF is indeed not supported in this firmware.
A version of Nero CD-DVD Speed which supports NEC PI/PIF scanning (with the unreleased firmware
) can be downloaded from:
http://cdspeed2000.com/files/NeroCDSpeed_375.zip
Thanks ErikDeppe

But they do have very interesting list of media. :)
It's worth taking a looking at.

2R8? Where does one find this firmware?
You know I seen a post about it at freaks by for the life of me I can't find it.
I think it may have been leaked and I though they said to hold off on using it.

I use Liggy's 2.18 "final", which is RPC1 with riplock, and supports flawlessly the main media I use (Ritek 8X printable and Taiyo Yuden 16X printables).
Since I don't use any other media brands (those two are easily avilable here and working flawlessly!) I have not tried any newer firmwares.

@ DD51: Your firmware choice is dependent on the media you waant to use- some are better for brand XXX, some others for ZZZ. Have in mind though that for half-penny for-kilo media (which are quite popular for a reason...) it's unlikely to find a decent firmware.

Damn... now I have a dilemma.

I want another NEC 3500 drive (for work this time). Having a tough time finding one. NewEgg (my usual retailer) does not have any more. Tried a few others, but they are out of stock too. It seems this drive is no longer being made... so says, one retailer.

Anyone know a reliable retailer (in the US) that has some? Or should I just give up and go for another drive (like NEC 3520 or BenQ DW1620A) ?!

Thanks scarecrow, I only use Ritek DVD's. I'll be receiving my 3520A this coming Monday and am anxious to try it out.
I still have NO idea what firmware to use.

@ DD51,

Congratulations on your purchase. The NEC ND-3500 is an excellent choice.

To be able to make a decision on which Firmware to use on your NEC ND-3500 suggest visiting the NEC Forum at CDFreaks.Com located at http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86 to obtain information on the various FirmWare available for the NEC ND-3500.

Also suggest visiting ScorpioSoft’s NEC Firmware Collection Page located at http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/. ScorpioSoft has done an excellent job assembling all the NEC firmware and presenting in an orderly manner.

Best Regards,
Coaster
