the FX is not a real GF5, it would not be a huge improvement;

if your board/processor/ram is fast enough (so that wouldn't be a bottle-neck) i would recommend a ATI RADEON™ 9800 or a RADEON™ 9800 Pro;
currently nVIDIA is more than 1 step behind ATI;

some how i dont think he can afford/justifie spending 300quid on a graphic card

since fx5200 are about 50 to 60 quid

tbh really honset i would not upgrade since your not a hard core gamer

but if you had we bit more cash you could get a fx5600 which i have seen going in uk for about £100

The FX5200 is targeted to replace the Geforce 4MX - a bugdget-priced card. Better than an MX420 .... of course, but not really enough DX9 performance to be "future proof".

In the kind of price range, the only real alternatives are DX8 instead of DX9 - eg. Radeon 8500/9000/9100/9200, an older Geforce 3 (known to ace the FX5200 on DX8) or maybe a Geforce 4 Ti4200 with 64Mb.
