A little question on Liteon burner

I am a owner of a Lite-on 24103S (24x-10x-40x). If 10x is supposed to be speed of CD-RW in writing, why the hell Nero allow me only to burn a shitty 4x ?

Thanks

hi shadowen

cd-rw media you used was 4x at a guess.

rewritable cd's will only write upto the speed stated on the disk.

you will need 10x blanks to get 10 x rewrite speed

Try another media or try deactivate smart-burn. Use the utility suplied by liteonit.com to test the max speed for each media. This utility is called smartburn (1 Mb).

Hope this help.

With a 24103S, you're in luck as regards overclocking it if you desire - though I'd be VERY wary of the recent 40x OC, the "3" suggests a good chance of getting it to 32x.

And yes, CD-RW medai has several variants:

Low speed (2x or 1-4x), High speed (4-10x, possibly 12x), Ultra-speed ?? (from 8x, to way beyond 12x) - YES, Ultra DOES overlap HS, but will be unusable in HS drives just as HS is in older non-HS drives.

WHAT A MESS!

PS. Poko, I keep meaning to ask ... do your eyes move? - it's like one of those pictures in a spooky house, where you're never quite sure.

Everything you ever wanted to know about overclocking Liteon's

And the answer on as 12101B is NO, NO WAY!
And recovery of mis-flashed Sanyo chipset drives (like the 12101B) is not as solid as the reflash of Mediatek chipset drives using MTKflash

I have a LiteOn 40-12-48 and it has a bloody-annoying habit:

If you place a CDRW or CDR disk in the drive which is certified to anything less than the drive's max-speed rating, Nero (or the firmware, I'm not sure which is to blame) only shows that the drive will write to maximum of the disk speed.

Example:

The drive is capable of writing to CDR at (this is only off the top of my head, so don't take it literally):

40x, 32x, 24x, 16x, 8x, 4x

Now, say you place a 16x-rated CDR in the drive. Of course, it will only write at a max of 16x, but the bit that is so annoying is that if you tell Nero to burn again, but put a better CDR disk in, say, one rated at 40x, Nero will still pretend that the LiteOn drive will only write to a maximum speed of 16x!! The way around this is to insert the new 40x CDR disk **BEFORE** you even tell Nero you are going to burn the project - i.e. BEFORE Nero jumps to the smaller burning dialogue box.

It took me half an hour to work this out when I first bought my drive - to begin with, I thought I'd been sold a flashed fake!

I realise you were referring to CDRW, and I must admit I steer clear of RWs, unless they are DVD-RWs, but I hope this still helps.

I thinks that is a Nero problem, nothing to do with the burner itself. I have the same burner, and I noticed that Nero has this kinkd of "memory" of a slowest CD media inserted before, and when you insert a faster one the maximum speed showed is that the first slowest cd, but you can change manually to the right speed recording without problems.

You right, thanks for your help. The problem was the media. Now I can burn@10x.

bye:D
Geezzz, so many n00bs. This one is so easy. In order to burn a cdrw at 10x you have to change the media, like you did and it worked. It worked because it was a HS-RW media. HS is for High Speed media. Only that kind of media can be burned at 8x (and 4x) or more speed. I guess more than 20x (or 24x) CD-RW medias it's called US-RW, ie. Ultra Speed media.

Don't forget that we were all "n00bs" once ;)

annoying habbit?

CDrZeus, i have flashed my liteon 32123S to a 40125S (40-12-48), and discovered the same thing you did. But you can de-activate the smartburn option in nero, and the problem is solved (recorder\choose recorder\option). This option apeared after the sucsesfull flash. Note that you only get the maximum speed in the outer ring of the cdr, i.e. if you burn a small amount mb's it will not reach the 40 times.

Yes, I agree - and I mentioned an alternative workaround in my original post. However, I suspect that Nero is NOT to blame for the issue, because it never happens with my Yamaha or Plextor drives. The LiteOn is not the best drive in the world, but for the money it is superb value, and it rips Audio like there is no tomorrow.

@onesolo - I take your point, but if you read the thread more carefully, you will see that there WAS some informed discussion before you replied, so please give people SOME credit for not being stoopid!! lol :p
