Just get a ftp server software like servu,ws_ftp server or Guild Ftp.Once you have one of these it aint to hard to set up.

i was meaning so people can access my files puting in my ip and stuff.

Me Hoasting it. so my mate can download stuff from my computer to his

um

Either you didn't read other topics or you didn't understand, download reccomended soft from above, install it, check which directories you want to share, start the server and voila! :D

yes Demulith is correct.
What you need is an ftp server software.
You can use apache, but since it sounds like you are a real beginner at this, I would recommend serv-U or G6 (also known as the bulletproof server). G6 I like better than the newer BulletProof version, but these 3 should be your top choices.

Good luck.

PS
all you do then is just assign what directories you want a person who logs in to access. Give them your IP & port number you chose for your FTP server & then make a login name & password for them.
That's it that's all.

Ryan5262,

from your tag, it looks like you connect to ypur ISP via a modem. If that is the case, it is very likely you will assigned a different IP address each time you connect and therefore, all your buddies will have to know the new address EVERY time you logon. This is a real pain to keep them informed.

One way round a dynamic address is to use client software that actually assigns your current address to your domain name every time you connect - it does this by sending the IP info every few minutes or so.

More info and the S/W can be downloaded from the link below. You will also be able to choose your domain name - albeit from a limited supply. Best of all, the service is FREE :D

nice one Oldy, though I haven't had any success with that dns2go app. Never worked for me (don't know why) & took them over 1 month to email me my password lol. Hopefully things have changed with that.

I know Serv-U has a DNS option for you to use (though I haven't tried it myself & I don't think it is free). There must be a few of them out there though (like dns2go).

*mine runs on cable, but my ip addy changes once every week or 2. If that is his case, he can just give them his new ip whenever it happens to change (little annoying yes, but just a though).

Yes m8 - Serv-U does have "built in" DNS client - TZO. It is only free for 1 month and then costs $25 for a year.

I tested both DNS2GO and TZO when I setup an FTP Server for a client. TZO was probably the best of the 2 but DNS2GO still seemed to perform OK. Strange about the password - we got ours in under 5 mins...;)

Google has a whole page of DNS apps - most are subcription but a few are free :)
