Firstly,XP would best be installed as a clean install,so remove win 98.

When you install XP do you get past the 'enter serial/key' screen??

remove all PCI and ISA cards;
remove all RAM sticks till one;
loan an othter graphic card (no gF3/gF4) for installation;
some boards have problems with "XP + gforce4" during setup;

after XP is installed, you can put in your own graphic card, RAM and the other devices again;

if you still will upgrade, look at this: http://www.cdrbase.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25283

how big is your power supply! if you remove everything but the bare essentials ie cdrom ram harddrive it might install but once you put everything else back in BSOD. that geforce 4 pull alot of power man .most people overllook the psu its one of the most vital components

ok thanx guys... yes the key i had wasthe one that came with it... thanx zen..... i sorta figued it owuld be the gforce beoing the prob but alas i have no one to borrow one from no one here has computer equipement.... i live in the smallest shitty little town in alabamaill try romoving the other stuff like u guys said and try that way to c if nething happens.... well ill reply when i test it

ok nothing worked.... now i mtrying to get atleast 2k pro to install and running into the same probs... goes all the way to the starting windows setup blue screen then it links then the screen shuts off andfthe computer stops responding

im thinking ill take the hd oiut and put it into another computere that i know for a fact will install it and then install it al the way to the actuall setup and then put it back in to myu computer and allow the setup to make it work on my computer ... dont know if this is a fgood idea or not

I've never had any probs with gforce graphics cards.You have enough memory for XP to install.
If I were you I would do a low level format of the hard drive and do a clean install before you start taking yer 'pooter to pieces!

go here http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/discwiz.html

d/l diskwizard starter edition (its for seagate drives but works on all hard drives)

use the disk utility program to write zeros to your drive(fast wipe takes seconds , standard takes 1 hour for a 20GB drive,bigger the drive-longer it takes)

This isn't a good idea!
because other computer -> other MB -> other system components--> setup will install wrong drivers for your MB;
