52X32X52X: hd led stays lit, and no dma settings

I just installed the Plextor 52X/32X/52X premium as a master on IDE2 with a 120 gig WD as a slave. My hd led stays on all the time, although I can see and access both drives ok. I was even able to burn an audio cd. If I disconnect either the plextor or the hd, the hd led goes out. Both connected, the light stays lit.
Also, don't know if this is related or not, I no longer have the advanced setting under device manager/Ide controllers to view/change my DMA settings. Only the general tab along with 2 other tabs is there (XP pro). I have the Intel D845EBG2 MB with intel application accelerator installed, to my knowledge I have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers and the CDRW also has the latest firmware.
It's not the plextor because I put it into another computer as a master to a DVD drive and the hd light was ok.
I replaced a 40X plextor which was going bad with this new one, and the old one never had these problems, this started as soon as I installed the 52X along with the plextools.
I'm stumped....any ideas?

Was the old one Master with a hard disk as slave?

I could be wrong, but I've never considered slaving a Hard disk to an Optical drive Master to be a particularly valid configuration - with that pairing, I'd always put the HD as Master, and the Optical drive as slave.
