2.1a firmware problem

For some reason I can't update my Sony 500A-DRU Firmware (2.0g) to new 2.1a or 2.0h. I got a reply from another site that the updater needs to be able to register itself.

All I know is that whenever I get to the point when it notifies me that my computer needs to restart before drive can be updated, I would click yes and my PC restarts. But the update doesn't do anything upon startup. I would click the updater again and it just takes me back through the same procedure over and over without updating, I would always end up with the updater telling me that my PC needs to restart before drive can be updated

I've uninstalled IAA (Intel Application Accelerator) and Norton Internet Security as someone noted that these programs prevent programs from registering. Still no update

Can anyone help me

Below are the steps that I took

1. I downloaded the 2.1a from sony storage site.
2. I switched to PIO only
3 I unistalled Application accelerator and Norton internet security
4 closed all programs
5 Double-clicked on the 2.1a firmware updater
6 confirmed my drive
7 clicked update drive
8 Got a dialog stating that computer must restart before drive can be updated. Do you want to restart your computer?
9 I click yes and computer restarts
10 After start up, nothing happens so I go through steps 5-9 with the exact same results. Nothing happens

I need to figure out what is keeping the updater from updating.

On sony site they say a couple other things to do, did you try them too?

  • When using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, log on to Windows as the computer administrator or as a user with administrator access privileges.
  • If you are installing [font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif] The Intel® Application Accelerator (Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver)[/font] in your computer, uninstall Intel Application Accelerator from the PC before executing firmware update. *Intel Application Accelerator (Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver) may be pre-installed in some computers manufactured by Dell Computer.
  • Before executing firmware update, uninstall any packet writing software, such as [DLA], [DirectCD], [B's CLiP] etc, from the PC.
  • If you are using the DRU-500A, disable [DMA setting] in Windows before executing firmware update. For details, refer to [Help and Support] in Windows.
Hope that helps.:)

I have Nero 6, Ulead dvd factory 2, and Alcohol 120%. I'm not being a jerk or anything, but what does my burning software have to do with the problem I have with not being able to run the 2.1a firmware updater?

Is there anyway I can force th 2.1a to update without restarting. Or, is there a way I can program 2.1a to run at startup?

I have to resolve this problem because I have 100 DVD-r media that need this firmware update

Think about it. You have a IDE DVD burner on your pc and you can't update the firmware, so any thing to do with that drive can cause the problem. That meens os, drivers, burning programs virtual drives.
Do you have a virtual drive install with Alcohol 120%?
Do you have XP's useless burning software inabled?
Do you have ASPIs installed?
Do you antivrus software running?
It might seem strange but these things can becausing your problem. :)
