    computer freezes

My brother has an old computer (not as old as mine) that has a nasty problem. It tends to freeze completely almost immediately after starting it. It starts all programs normally, you can see the desktop and within the first minute or so something goes wrong. It doesn't always happen, but very...

    Wordpad problem

Can anyone help please? Wordpad doesn't open office files properly anymore. It looks like they are opened as txt files, all the normal "features" are missing. Could this be due to a missing or damaged file? If yes, which one(s)?

    crashes

For some reason my computer has been crashing an awful lot lately. Always the same type of error message, memory related. For example, while opening the "Folder options, File types" tab this one: "The instruction at "0x77d46d88" referenced memory at "0x00dbb97c". The memory could not be "read"...

nec 2510A "found new hardware" problem

I've had this drive for about a month and all this time Windows "found new hardware" at startup. Very annoying! Nec doesn't have drivers (or is it firmware) for it. It works fine without that. So there is no way to update anything. Also, selecting the option that should stop Windows informing me...

    Internet Explorer 6.05

A new build of the Internet Explorer 6.05 is out now! This Explorer comes from Longhorn and is now available already as standalone for WinXP/2003. http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/1/10-1-62.shtml It's old news, but it was new for me. :o

    weird sound "thing"

Now everybody, please don't mock me after reading this. ;) I bought my first dvd recorder about two weeks ago for making back-ups. The hard disks were full, mainly with episodes of tv series. I noticed a strange thing with the sound quality. At the beginning of the disks the sound is duller...

    dvd size

The first two dvd's I ever burned turned into coasters, because (as it turns out) the data compilation was too big. 4500MB should be no problem for a 4.7GB disk, at least I thought so. However, the disk can only hold 4483MB of data. Is that normal?

Need Help Installing a NEC 2510A

This might be a stupid question, but yesterday I bought NEC 2510A. It doesn't need a special driver(s) with Windows XP in order to work. However, now Windows keeps asking about the new hardware it found. Even after selecting the option "Don't prompt me again to install this software", it still...

    Kazaa Lite users online

In the last few days Kazaa Lite 2.4.3 often reports a number of online users that's far below 100.000. Normally this is, roughly, between 2.5 and 3 million. Has anyone else noticed this (lite versions perhaps banned from the network)?

    English dictionary for your browser

I recently found a great online 200,000 term English dictionary for use in browsers; LookWAYup. How does it work? On a page where the web site version is activated, double-click on any word Alternatively, if it is installed on your browser (it takes 10 seconds), then press the LookWAYup...

    Securepoint Personal Firewall now freeware

Quote from the Securepoint forum, dated 07.05.2004: "Die Personal Firewall ist ab sofort für den nicht kommerziellen Gebrauch kostenlos.", meaning the firewall is freeware for non-commercial use from now on. I don't know how good\bad it is, but I thought it might be worth mentioning this news...

    F**K Partition Magic!!!

I wanted to resize the 2 partitions on a 40 GB back-up drive. This is only a few moths old. The partitions I origionally made turned out to be the wrong sizes, 1 too small and the other too big. No problem, so I thought, using Partition Magic. Big mistake!! When trying to open the partitions...

    Search doesn't find all files

Windows XP search doesn't always find the requested files, even if they are somewhere on the system (of course with the necessary advanced options enabled). Is there an option or registry hack somewhere that will change this behaviour?

    XP Style Hacker

"Get your old Win32 apps looking like their Windows XP counterparts! Just select the EXE file from the program dialog and the next time you run the...

    clean-up utility

ClearProg http://www.clearprog.de/ This is great. A tiny "cleaner",120 kb no install needed, that can do (almost) everything that well-known shareware alternatives like Window Washer and Tracks Eraser Pro can. Clean tracks left by Windows and browsers, has many plug-ins for al sorts of...

    Audiograbber freeware

Quote: On February 9, 2004 Audiograbber will be released as freeware. When I sold my other cd-ripper AudioCatalyst to Xing I signed a contract which has not allowed me to release Audiograbber as freeware but on February 9, 2004 that contract expires. It has been a great journey and experience...
