Can't initialize ASPI manager

Hi all,
new to this and need some help!
I've just installed an NEC dual format DVDR along with Sonics "MyDVD" and arcsofts "Showbiz" that were bundled with a firewire card package. My operating system is WinME.
Both come up with the message "cannot initialize ASPI manager" on startup and the burning package doesn't seem to see the media I've put in. (They're DVD+R but that shouldn't matter with a dual format burner, right??)
Windows is seeing the burner and I can "explore" commercial DVDs but not play them back.
I've tried installing adaptecs ASPI V4.71 and the diagnostic tool that comes with it says everythings funky.
So why can't MYDVD initialize it?
In case it's relevant: I also have a CD RW burner and run easyCD creator 5 with no problems.
any help would be much appreciated..

(I've tried to trawl through all the historical threads to find info on this but can't find anything relevant. Apologies if I've missed it somewhere..... :) )

Hi Stretch666, Welcome to our forum! :cool:

uninstall v4.71 the usual way, reboot;
download and unpack ForceASPI 1.7: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=32137
run ForceASPI's "KillASPI.bat", reboot;
run ForceASPI's "InstASPI.bat", reboot;
try your burning programs again;
