not sure if this is the right place, but i need a little assistance.
Today I recieved this Email:

'My address book has been infected with a virus and as a result, so has yours because your address is in my book. The virus is called jdbgmgr.exe. It cannot be detected by Norton or McAfee anti virus programmes.
It sits dormant for 14days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger or address book whether or not you send emails.

TO GET RID OF IT:

1. go to start then find or search
2. in files/folders write the name jdbgmgr.exe
3. be sure to search your 'C' drive
4. click find or search
5. virus has teddybear logo with name jdbgmgr.exe
6. DO NOT OPEN IT
7. right click and delete it
8. go to recycle bin and delet it there also'

Is there a genuine virus threat here, or is this a hoax to get me to delete a system file and damage my setup? Any help much appreciated.

This is not a virus.
Its Microsoft® Debugger Registrar for Java.
Right click on this file and go on properties....

please read the link from symantec

Thanks Flyby, svgusta.....Your help is appreciated.

A short time ago I recieved this from the sender of the original Email:

'Hi everyone,
I sent you an e-mail earlier about a virus. DO NOT ACT ON THE INSCRUCTIONS IN IT!! people who i sent it to have since contacted me and said that IT IS A HOAX!! and if you do delete the so called virus, you delete a file needed to read Java script on the internet.'

Seems this is as you said, a hoax, but I'm a bit green when it comes to this kind of thing (but not gullible!), and I hope that this post helps prevent someone from damaging their setup.

And Flyby thanx for the link!

Now all I need to worry about is to get rid of those damn nigerian scams!!!

yeah this is the legendary TEDDY icon hoax virus that has been doing the rounds for what seems like forever  it has a teddy icon btw if you search it out :)

one point to remember here is to checy symantecs website for possible hoax files etc it has a good database of virii to check against with a good search engine :)
