Hi all
i have a movie that is in the xvid format that i have put onto a DVD-r disk.
The problem arises when i put that disk into my div-x/dvd player the quality of the movie is terrible,it is what windows would look like running in 8 colours!
I'ts very blocky and basicaly unwatchable.
I think my divx player has divx501 codec built into the machine but the movie i'm trying to play is a later version i think so!
Would that make a difference.
And is there any way that i can do a quick conversion to suit my player rather than a 10 hour long avi-mpg job?

Ta all

You found the problem, many AVI/DVD Players have problems with Xvids. Basically you bought the wrong unit :D

But to convert it to DivX, just load into VirtualDUBMod, and for Video Compression, select DivX. The hit the Configure button and set the Bit Rate to something just a bit higher than what the original had (Use GSPOT to check the original AVI's Bitrate). Then hit Save AVI. Normally takes about 1/2 to 1.5 hrs on my PC. You need to have the latest of both Xvid & DivX codecs installed on your system, of course.

Possibly an issue with a custom quant matrix.

Grab MPEG4 modifier. It is a must have for anyone with a standalone MPEG4/AVI player. It can report the matrix used, whether b-vops, s-vops or q-vops were used, also the max number of bframes, whether packed bistream was used and if so it can unpack it for MediaTek based players when more than 1 bframes were used.

GSpot is also usefull. Make sure it is a recent alpha/beta though.
