XP won't write audio CD's anymore..

I have Windows XP Home and recently I can't burn CD's. I've used WinCDR and Windows Media Player, but both say that there is a problem and that I should check my media, change speeds, etc. The only thing I can think of that has changed on the computer since this happened (never had a problem burning CD's before) was that I ran low on disk space once, but then I cleaned it up and have plenty of space now. Things havent been the same since. I've gone through about a dozen new CD's with only 3 or 4 songs being written to them. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Sure would appreciate any help. Is there any way to reinstall all the drivers or files that control when, how and where a CD gets burned? Thanks for any help.

Best Regards,
Robert

Hi Robertucho, Welcome to our forum! :)

what was your way to "clean"; Do you think you deleted system files and messed your whole system? if so then read here: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=6985

if you think your burning apps are the problem, then try BAO - burnatonce: http://www.burnatonce.com

two general hints: limit burning speed to 8x and use trustable CD-R media;;

Thank you for the welcome and your response.

I just used the uninstall program to eliminate some unneed programs and acquire more space.

> if you think your burning apps are the problem, then try BAO - burnatonce: http://www.burnatonce.com
I tried BAO, and can't get it to work at all. Windows Media, will write between 2-5 files to disk, then it closes all the files without completing the task.

> two general hints: limit burning speed to 8x and use trustable CD-R media;;
I limit my speed to 4X and the media I use has always worked in the past.

I don't know much about the workings of recording CD's, but I don't think it is actually the files that write to disk, since it will burn the first few cuts. For some reason I'm thinking it is where and how it copies the files to a temporary area, or something to that effect. Is there a way to get everything back to how it was? Repair XP?

Thanks again.

What happened whith BAO? BAO gives you the chance to analyse your problem because:
- it decodes the files (MP3s, WMAs) back to a WAV before starting the burning process
- it uses it's own temporary folders
- it starts the burning process after all (decoding, caching) is done

this way you can see which step is successful and which fails; please report again;

a repair may fix it if, but first i would try BAO again;

Tried Burnatonce no luck

Thanks for your persistence! I tried the software you suggested and copied the error messages. I still can get MS Media Player to burn anywhere from 1-7 cuts out of 10 on an attempt, then it just stops writing, closes all files and says it can't copy the files.

Back to Burnatonce... I have no idea what this means, but this is what happens. The set up is just as pictured in the help files for Audio Mastering CD's, except I use 4X not 16X or 48X just to be safe.

If you are using WinXP (you say you are) the reason of the failure is most likely the XP embedded burning engine (Imapi.sys). SPTI interface is a clean solution but it does NOT lock the drive to external factors during burning. So:
1 Disable Windoze auto Insert notification.
2. Disable Imapi, if you are not using it (control panel/administratie tools/services).
3. Better still install another device interface, namely ASPI (search at filemirrors for ForceASPI 1.7-plz ignore/bypass ForceASPI 1.8). Install it, reboot and on the BAO interface untick the "SPTI" option. ASPI allows locking your device when burning.

CD burner still wont work after using your suggestions

1 Disable Windoze auto Insert notification.

Done

2. Disable Imapi, if you are not using it (control panel/administratie tools/services).

Done

Done and checked.

This is the error I get after having done all those changes and using BAO

You are sure that aspi4.60-1021 is installed properly??Is it green colour??If not,check the attachment..Its even better then forceaspi(bit faster)..just run it..If aspi is good,it will abort a upgrade....if not,it will upgrade..In thAT CASE reboot and check it....

Thank you for your help. I checked and the files are the correct ones and in place. Two more disks wasted! This is getting expensive and very frustrating. I'm wondering if there just isn't a way to unload all the auidio and CD rom drivers, cache files, etc. and start over? Heck the thing burned plenty of CD's perfectly until I once ran out of disc space. Since then I get maybe one good CD from 10 attempts. It will burn from 3-7 cuts then stop without closing the disc. The computer can read those files, but a regular CD or auto CD player won't. Have any suggestions?

Best Regards,
Robert

Error message on BurnatOnce

This may give you some insight as to what I go through with BurnatOnce.

It burns from 5-7 tracks or more, then just stops. The media is good and all changes above have been made.

allways the same sort of error; i recommend you to try another media brand (even if they always worked before);
my current favorite is "Intenso", don't know if they are available at your location;

last option is testing your drive in a friends PC, the drive itself could be the problem too;
