xp upgrade problem

am trying to upgrade my system from 98 to xp starts ok but gets to 21 min remaining then just stops will not go any further dont want to format disk and lose all my mp3 music on hdd as am planning on adding dvd burner to copy all music to dvd disk any helpor advise appreciated thanks

Just create a new partition, if your HD capacity allows that, and move your MP3's and other critical data there- then proceed to a clean install.
There are several programs out there which will allow you to repartition without losing existing data.

Xp after win98???If i were you..i would backup to cdr and format all hd..then clean install xp-sp1... :)

Could just create a folder called "DATA" or somesuch thing, move all your mp3's, documents, etc to it and install XP to the Windows folder (select to overwrite/delete - do NOT format C: !) .

Q: Have you run a thorough scandisk on your hd before trying to upgrade?
