xp to 98

hi

im currently useing xp but get alot of trouble with it
so i want to try 98 only problem is iv never installed
98 before how do i go about it iv got windows 98 cd
but thats all do i need to format hardrive manually
if so how iv looked at few guides but dont really
understand i need a dummies guide if sumone could help
it would be great

You need a licence key with the CD.
Not sure if 98 CD's are bootable - I've always installed using a setup floppy - download one from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm if missing.

Is it really a good idea though? - 98 is going unsupported at the end of the year.
Unless you have a specifically UNSUPPORTED compenent in WinXP, the first thing I'd check on trouble with ANY Windows system is the RAM - Windows will seek out and deliberately use any defective RAM (well, it sure seems that way) - MULTIPLE passes of memory test utilities should be made, as it's easy to prove that memory is bad (1 error), but very hard to PROVE that it is good.

If the HD is not clean, then you'll probably need to partition and format manually, to be certain you're starting from a known base.

windoz os cds r bootable,from win95B as far as i remember & encountered... if original ,win98 & win98se r cd bootable,but now depends if ur motherboard(if old) support booting on optical drives

If you want to install 98 over XP:
1-Create a new FAT32 partition
2-Boot you computer with a floppy disk, one like LTR12101B is talking about; Win98 CD isn't bootable.
3-Be sure to run the "smartdrv" command, as this will accelerate everything.
4-Create a win98 directory on your C:\ drive (C:\win98)
5-Copy everything from the win98 CD to this directory. This is necessary as Win98 setup doesn't load CD!!!
6-run the C:\win98\install.exe and follow directives

Win98 isn't really good. XP should be the best @ the moment, but if you have some problem with it or if it's to hard for your computer, I'll suggest Win2000 as it is way better than Win98.
