xp pro firewall info req

i recently upgraded to xp pro after using 98se im not sure how to proceed i used to use zonealarm on 98se but what about xp what should i use do i need to disable anything if so how i need a walk through i find xp very different to win98se . also i 98se used to have quick launch from taskbar how do i get that back also how do i find out what programs i used to use will not work before i install them and watch windows crash does nero work !

Not sure how 2 disable the built in FW in XP, i think it is in Internet Options in 1 of the taba, 2 get the quick launch bar back right click the task bar\toolbars & then click quick launch, most progs from th last 2 years will work with XP, U can always use the compatibilty mode(right click the exe file in the folder of the prog & look at the compat tab, just don't go installin old Utillity progs or old AntiVirus, if in doubt read the progs readme

Yep nero will work ok if it a nerwer version, U might have 2 disable the IMAPI burnin engine, 2 to this right click My Computer & select manage, this opens the computer management console, then go 2 services & look 4 the IMAPI engine right click & click stop, then disable

1) I find Sygate works very well with XP for me and my config. Tiny is also a good choice.

to disable it go to control panel, network connections, then right click your modem of whatever type e.g cable modem, go properties, there should be 3 tabs, go to the one at the right, it should have checkbuttons, uncheck the firewall.

the windows firewall is AWFUL, i switched it off when i installed xp and a month later it came back on by itself, when its on i could get loads of programs to work like edonkey, overnet, messenger downloading, and a hell of a lot of other things, use zonealarm 4 it the bees knees !

Or better still use Kerio 2.1.15, best firewall there is & free 2

Ooopps & soz about the wrong instructions 4 switchin of the XP firewall, i don't use XP meself, i find 98se does all i need it 2 do, & it does it quicker than XP ever will

thanks for replies is the xp firewall on by default . also with fire walls im not to sure the best way of setting them up are they ok to leave in default mode im not on a network just a single house pc i have zonealarm 4 and kerio 2 and 3 why wuld xp fire wall
turn it self back on how to disable permenantly xp antispy maybe
anyone know also what else should i turn off in xp

Yep most of the firewalls nowadays use pretty strict rules by default, all U have 2 do is be carefull what U give access, most outgoin connections are ok, it the incomin ones that can be dodgy

Most will popup a box askin if U want 2 accept or deny the connection, just use Ur judgement as 2 whether 2 allow it or not

PS i still say use Kerio version 2, there are betas of version 3 & 4, but U better goin 4 1 that is proven 2 work ok

Weel only let apps that require net access get it(ie internet apps, browsers, email)or apps that use the net 2 update.I normally let them connect out, but not connect back in.Also just read the messages that appear when U get an alert, if U not got any progs runnin & it says some 1 wants 2 send a packet or wants 2 connect 2 ports on Ur machine be wary

Html mail will often try 2 coonct out or in 2 try 2 display ads, i don't allow that.Im not an expert on this, i just use comman sense & read the alerts carefully, if im not sure i block it, if it causes a prob , i unblock it

U could try semdin a PM 2 IPDave, he seems well up on the network side of things & can probably give U a clearer answer than i can

The embedded XP firewall works surprisingly well (...for an MS app, that is, and I cannot warantte it won't call Microsoft after your last "security update"). But it doesn't filter outgoing traffic, so you might wish to combine it with a sandboxer to have full security.
