xp only recognizes cd and dvd when inserted at boot time

Here's a problem i've been struggling with for over a week now:
(I think this happened after installing and uninstalling DVDXCopy. Re-installing it has no effect...)

xp only recognizes cd and dvd when inserted at boot time.

In the device manager, both cdr and dvd drives show up as working, but under the section "unknown" devices. The names of the devices are correct though.

If I don't insert a cd at boot time, no disk will be recognized when I insert it into the drive. After I try to view the contents of the disk in explorer I do get a message "Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows."
The dvd drive does not give an error message like that, but just shows no files in explorer.

Here's the funny part though:
- music cd's will play (using winamp for example)
- I can still backup dvds using DVD Decrypter. DVD Shrink does not work anymore.

So I know the hardware is still ok. It used to work before DVDXCopy anyway - so I really think it's a driver issue.

Hope anyone can help...

PS, I already tried suggestions like nero registry check, etc. Removing/changing the upper filter and lower filter from the registry has no effect...

Thanks,
troublesafe

It sure looks like a driver issue!

Have you tryed using the system restore? it can do miracles for driver problems...

Maybe you could try to delete the drives in the device manager and let windows reinstall them with drivers from the original CD.

Maybe delete the drivers entries in device manager, turn off computer, remote physicly the drives, boot the computer, shut it down again and reinstalling them...

I just had a similar problem with a friends pc. In windows couldn't see what on the cd's. Well on that machine I ran spybot and found 420 items on startup and I let spybot fix the problems and the cd-rom worked. Hope that helps

same problem but it was nero 6 that caused it. nero even made my twain drivers invisible so that my scanner did not work.

Thanks for the replies...

big-gie:
* tried system restore - it's activated, and I have restore points however ANY restore point I select I get the message (after reboot) "nothing changed". So much for XP system restore.
* like you said, deleted the devices from device manager, unplugged devices, reboot. Then plug back in and reboot. Result: devices still show up as unknown and no change in behavior. Only if inserted at bootup it will recognize a cd/dvd and once the tray has opened it will not recognize any disk anymore.

pc-guy: I'm constantly running ad-aware and there's no spyware/adware on my system...

gomez1: at least my twain drivers are still working, but then again I'm not running nero 6.

The thing that puzzles me about this whole thing is that cd/dvd's can be read by explorer if inserted at boot time, also dvd/cd burning is still working as well as backup using DVD Decrypter.
What a pain...

Maybe a bios problem?

if the cd is found @ bootup when there is a cd in it, the bios see it but not the OS...

hum this is really weird!

I would:
-try to flash the bios
-reinstall Windows
-throw my computer by the window

But this isn't maybe what you are looking for... sorry...

Hi troublesafe, Welcome to our forum!

your problem is a typical case for Nero's RegistryChecker:

That might be,

but as i already described in my initial mail, I did use this utility without any effect...

I did get a bit closer to a solution today though:
when I start xp in safe mode, both my dvd drive and cd drive work properly...

Now the question is, how do I find out what the difference is in safe mode and normal operation...

sorry, didn't read your posting carefull enough;

how do I find out what the difference is in safe mode and normal operation...
safe mode: only for XP itself required drivers and services are loaded; no 3rd party drivers, services and software is running;

please provide us a complete list of your installed (current and former) burning software/engines;

two other things to do are:
- disabling XP's native burning engine (services > IMAPI)
- killing your current ASPI and reinstalling v4.6 (1021): http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=32137

Duracell, thanks for the suggestions.

- I had already uninstalled my version of aspi and reverted back to v. 4.6. Used ForceASPI to do that. Did not solve the problem...
- I also disabled the native xp cd burning service. Again, no effect...

My list of installed burning software:

- Nero 5.5.10.35 (worked fine before I had this problem, and still works to burn disks)
- Blindwrite Suite (also installed and working before I had this problem. Still works to backup disks)
- CopyToDVD (also installed and working before I had this problem. Still works to burn dvd's)

- DVDXCopy (didn't like the program and uninstalled it. That's when the trouble started)

Again, the funny thing is that extracting data/music with these engines seems fine. They must access the drives differently than windows explorer...

Still no idea what to do. I might try to reinstall XP on top of my existing XP.

Well,

i've reinstalled xp on top of the old installation (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/repair.txt) with a slight improvement:
my device manager does no longer show the drives as unknown, but lists them under "DVD/CD-Rom Drives".

Other than that, the behaviour is still the same...
I'm running out of ideas here...
Well, I have an idea. I had a similar problem at work, though the funny part was the external USB drive worked fine. I tracked it down to a faulty IDE driver. Once I downloaded the updated drivers for my motherboard and installed them everything has worked great ever since. I hope this may be the case for you too.

leland, thanks,

but it's not the IDE driver. In safe mode things are working fine using the same IDE driver...

I looked around in the xp bootlog file and found the following interesting entries:
First it states that it loads the drivers Cdfs.SYS, afd.sys and Udfs.SYSLoaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Cdfs.SYS
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\afd.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Udfs.SYS

But then a few lines lower it states it didn't load these drivers...
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Cdfs.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\afd.sys
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Udfs.SYS

In safeboot mode, it just loads these drivers, no mention that load failed...

Still don't know what to make of this...

Help...
