Xmpeg errors - can't encode

I keep getting errors in XMpeg 4.2a (and even in the previous version) that keep crashing the program. If I go through the output options and make my way to the General tab, it crashes. The only way I can get to it is to go to it immediately after the program starts, but then everything crashes as soon as I close it. If I completely ignore the tab (which I can afford to do), it gives me an error to the lines of "Unable to encode video. Please check that no other applications are using the file and that your software it set up correctly." Nothing else is open, because I did a restart and closed everything that didn't have anything to do with the program (except the necessities, of course).

I like the simplicity of the program, and it has something in it that Flask doesn't. Any clues? I'm running an Athlon 1.4 trying to encode a VOB to Divx 4.12.

If this version is crashing and so were the previous versions, then I would suggest there is something not quite right with your system.

It sounds like XMpeg is having problems "seeing" the VOB files and this could be your IDE drivers, etc. If you have a VIA based m/b, suggest the latest 4 in 1 drivers (from h**p://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 )

Do you regularly defrag your HD. What anti virus software you using, Nortons whould have to be the biggest problem there.

XMpeg is not the most stable bit of software known, your not alone but unless your system is 100% it just wont work.

I have it running on my Win2000 Athlon 1.2g VIA m/b with no errors. It easy to use but Vidomi is even easier and simpler and very stable. Have a read in the Tutorial section.

Lots of information there, so let me see if I can cover it all.

Yes, I do have a VIA based board, and I'll get the latest drivers (although I think I have them already, but ya never know).

Norton is on my system, but I disabled it to save encoding time.

My HD is always defragged

One quick question: can Vidomi crop the credits off of a movie? That's the main reason I was using Xmpeg, and will have to look for something else if not...

Looks like I can still do what I was looking to do, just as soon as I figure out the new settings on the program. Once again, thanks very much! It should work, but I won't know for a few hours. We'll just assume it does, or I know where to come back

Just one thing... is there an easy way to crop the files like in Flask/Xmeg? I think my aspect ratios are off for some reason, and I remmebered not having to crop the sides off. Everything else worked, though...

No there is not any way to crop the image. It automatically crops to the actual image size.

If the image aspect ratio is out, then in Options/Advanced Video play around with Override Aspect ratio.... option. I have never had a need to use this.

I messed around with it and fixed whatever it was (who knows). I'll leave well enough alone. Thanks for the help.... this should do exactly what I need it to in the future, too!

Need help ChickenMan, - problems with XMPEG

Finally got all hard- and software settled and up running, I was today going to rip my first dvd to vcd following your tutorial.

The only thing I haven't done according to your tutorial, is that I installed Xmpeg instead of Flask. I changed the file name of the Panasonic Plugin accordingly to "panplug.cm.xmpeg".

Everything goes smoothly till I reach the easy part, hitting "Start Conversion". Get's the error message: "Panasonic MPEG1 Encoder Fatal error". Killing that one I'm getting "Unable to encode video. Please check that no other applications are using the file and that your software it set up correctly". Have been through everything again and again, but can't figure it out. Only thing I can come up with, is that I noticed in the Pana Plugin readme.txt that they are not mentioning my OS (ME) as supported.

Or can it have anything to do with the problem mentioned in my thread "http://forum.cdrsoft.cc/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2733"?

Crying for help...........

The Pana Pluggin works in ME no probs, I used it there for quite a while myself.

I think you ahve a Windows problem actually. Reading the othere thread, your not getting anything to actually run. Could be 1 of a 1000 reasons why.

Yeah ChickenMan, I think you are right, but I do not understand it. When I started all this I first downloaded all the programs and kept them on a separate comp. Then I installed the new hardware. When this was running I formatted both HD and installed Win Me all over. Then updated all drivers (VIA, ASPI etc. etc.) and finally installed the programs mentioned in your 2 tutorials, very carefully one by one. They are now the only progs I got on the comp besides CloneCD, F-Secure and Z A. The enviroment should be as clean as it can be. Internet, mail, work, games etc. I do on other comp. Hmmm.....

Well, I do not give up, and I'm now going to do the whole procedure again. I will add one program at a time, test it, and first when it is running go for next one. Then we can can take it from there.
