I'm not using either of those mods. I'm using one called Apple X, it lets me turn off the mod chip to use the xbox on live. (But i think other mods have similar features now).
But i find this easier to use than the others that uses switches to turn the mod on or off.
Good thing about this one is i can press and hold the power button to turn the mod off and an orange xxbox logo shows up instead of a green one.
Yes you can copy xbox games to dvd, not just to the HHD.

I've got a "cheapmod" too, same as Shadey, works fantastic 
Both chips you mentioned are good chips also.
In answer to your other question, no you can't do disc to disc (original to blank) backups. You need to FTP into your Xbox and copy over the files to your PC HD, then either "data burn" or create the iso using craxtion. Or you can upgrade your Xbox HDD and use DVD2Xbox to copy the files to the Xbox HDD to play from there.

i need to "FTP" ?? what is that
i have craxtion and i have the evoX dash board i don't what to do from there
so can i copy disc to disc using data burn??

First of all i have an executor and find that fine but i couldn't compare that to another chip. It allows you to boot with the chip by holding the power button or the standard xbox by using the eject button which allows you to still use xbox live! Depending on what chip you get you will need a dashboard i use EvolutionX.
Burning games is a three step procedure which involves FTP'ing the game from the xbox converting it to an iso format and burning it to disc.
I use Flash FXP to transfer to my PC - ISOCraxtion to convert to iso (This also allows you to burn multigame discs) and I personally use Clone DVD to burn but alot of people use recordnow max but you can also use nero. Different xboxs have different dvd drives so you will need to experiment if your discs don't work. I went through lots of DVD+/- discs before settling to DVD+RW so if i get a bad burn I can rewrite over it anyways!
