Write Errors - Hardware or Drivers?

I've been burning DVD's on my laptop for months. I've not had any problems with my software or hardware since I purchased it. I was burning DVDs, one here, one there, and then abruptly it all stopped. I don't THINK I installed any new software or altered the system, but I could be wrong. I do install things all the time so I could have just forgoten about something.

Anyway, while using Nero 5.5.x I recieved a Write Error while the burn process was at 1%. It bails out at the VERY beginning of the lead in. I have a Toshiba 6100 series laptop with a 1x SD-R6012 DVD-R burner. Using DVD-Decrypter it also bails at 1%. I swapped out the burner with a friend of mine for a 2x, same model, and it still happens just like with the other burner installed.

I found another thread where someone was having a similar issue with having Daemon Tools installed so I uninstalled that and it removed a SCSI device from my Hardware list. Still doesn't work. Upgraded to Nero 6.0.11 and installed the Adaptek ASPI drivers. Still doesn't work.

can anyone help me?

Here is my Nero log for the last one that didn't work:

I see you have PXHelp20.sys (Prassi) on your PC and Nero 6. They dont seam to like one another and cause problems, a known problem. Get rid of one and try the other for burning. Ive found Nero 6.x is not good for DVD burning, 5.5.10.54 works fine.

I forgot to mention that I can burn a CD-R just fine...it's jsut the DVD's that don't burn. On both drives, my original and the one I borrowed. I've also tried multiple DVDs as well. I only have one brand to try, but I have thrown a few different ones in just to see if it was a bad disk and it chnaged nothing.....

I uninstalled Prassi and it changed nothing..

Hmmm..... I just went to the bottom of the spool and used a blank and it seems to be making a DVD now... I hope it's not the media.... i'll try with another DVD again and see what happens.

This is exactly the symptom of crappy media. Check the exact media info on the last burnt DVD that worked and then the ones that were coasters. I´ll bet there will be a difference. I´ve stopped using DVD-R because of all the bad media.
