winxp pro bootup problem

Hi,

I need help pronto. My winxp pro machine is acting up lately. Recently it began to restart for no apparent reason (at least to my knowledge). And many times during bootup, the comp just restart when it get to the winxp logo (the one with the progress blue bar). Usually a failure bootup is when the winxp logo appears unilluminated. A successful bootup follows a luminated winxp logo. Only after several restarts can I get into windows again.

Any suggestions will suffice. Thanks.
p.s. I have no recent hardware changes.

Abit SH6
Gainward GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64MB
P3; 500MHz, 100FSB

IBM 40GB GXP

It would be helpful if you could provide some additional information.

Startup protocol

Startup behavour in safe mode

Event log

Try hitting F8 on bootup and selecting Safe Mode. If all works and does not reboot after a day or so in Safe Mode, you probably have a software driver error. If if still reboots in Safe Mode, could be hardware.

Try going into Safe Mode, running chkdsk c: /f on the boot drive and reboot. See if you have disk errors.

Give more info if none of this helps...

Hi,

Boot up process appears very normal then suddenly the comp restart back to POST, and this loop could go on for a long time.

Anyway, after a first unexpected restart, winxp pro displays a list of menu something like this (I forgot the order):

(1)Start up using Last Known Configuration
(2) Start up Normally
(3) Safe Mode
(4) Safe Mode with Command
(5) Safe Mode with Networking
and some short general explanations.

If I choose boot up normally or safe mode, the system works for a little bit then freeze so I have to hit restart button. But sometimes I get lucky and winxp bootup fine.

I don't know if these descriptions are any use but my comp is not displaying much. And also I experience the same problem with a fresh installation of winxp pro via a new WD HDD.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the mobo because I'm using the latest bios from Abit update.

Thank for helping.

Try pulling out and completely reseating your memory and cpu. I would also reseat your video (AGP) and other PCI cards if that does not work. I've had both processor creep and memory creep give me strange problems berfore...

dmi pool data

I think I rejoiced too early. Same problems struck the next day. Anyways, I think it has something to do w/ the bios process. Usually during POST, there is a message "Verify dmi pool data...." Now if it displays "success" then computer boot up fine. Would you happen to know what verify dmi pool data mean?

Thanks.

Problem solved!

My mobo and other components took a beating as I hunted the culprit. Make me feel like I should apologize to mistreating my comp. Anyways, problem gone after I replaced the CPU.
