windows xp will not shut down (keeps restarting)

Hi, I have a problem that somewhat confuses me .... When I TURN OFF windows xp, the computer says it's closing down but the black screen with "it's safe to turn off windows" does not appear, the computer re-starts instead. I have not click the re-start button - only the "turn off computer". I have no idea what's caused it and would appreciate any help that may be out there.

If your motherboard computer support acpi interface must possible to configure the type of computer during installation.
If you have a installation disk when start push f5 and choice a type of computer you have.
I am not sure to help you,but if the problem is that may work

Hi lincolncity

Think U might have 2 go in2 the power management options in Control Panel & on 1 of the power tabs, there is an option 2 enable APM(the older power management)

This should save U having 2 set it all up again with a bit of luck

I had something similar with XP, when i tried 2 shutdown it just restarted, after hunting about & finding that option & enabling it, it shutdown perfectly

Hi

First Id like to say to everyone that I am also having the same problem..

I have done some research and have come across something that will cure this, Thats the WINDOWS XP PRO SP2...

It has the fixed entries already there to resolve the problem... A hint email MICROSOFT.COM..

Which Motherboard do ya have ?
M8 motherboard has a issue with a USB devices been plugged in and when press shutdown .. it restarts ... there was BIOS upgrade that fixed that .. so check ya makers of ya motherboard home page .. might fix for it there ..

My motherboard make is SUPERMICRO Model NO: P6DBE..
I have been on they site but have updated my bios about 2-3 yrs ago, has not been any updates since...

If you know where that bios upgrade is please let me know...

Just enable ACPI within system BIOS- it should suffice, even for very old mobos.

Hi

I have its been on since ive had my PC...

When I had WINDOWS ME installed its used to shutdown...
I have installed XP and its stopped Shutting down, But I dont think it would have made any changes to the bios...
