Windows XP running slow after SP1

Hi all

I've just installed SP1 onto my system and I've found that its running really slow.

This is what im running:
Windows XP Professional
P4 1.7
256 ram
20 gig HD

Im wondering if anyone knows if there is something i can do to make it run better, as it was not running this way prior to SP1.

Another question I have is that after installing SP1, my windows update doesnt seem to want to work because apparently my product key is invalid. Im not sure if it is or isnt as a friend installed their copy of XP professional onto my computer.

Anyway... any advice would be greatly appreciated

SP1 does not really slow down puters, but some post-SP1 updates really do that thing. Of course it's also dependent on harware configuration.
Finally I'm sorry about your invalid product key... I may suggest you getting a valid one.

as per scarecrow re the key Because your friend is stupid to install his XP on your puter U should get a legal copy for yourself

I do remember reading about slowdowns on some computer configurations,after SP1,and new recent patches.It didn't affect me so I didn't keep the link.Only problem is it was on the Microsoft site,which can be a bugger to find what you need.Perhaps a search of their knowledge base.

Here is a tool to see if your friend used his key on your XP.I don't consider it warez.It is a retrieval tool IMHO.

I searched the knowledgebase because I remember M$ releasing a patch to fix PC's that were slowed down after upgrading to SP1, but could not find it.
