Question.
I have DVD Ripper ready to edit vob's and menu items. I have the path set to use the player in the windows media player file. The player will start but says it cannot download decompressor and will not show anything? Any suggestions?

what version of Windows Media Player are you using?. Do you have any DVD software installed on your PC and have you tried Zoomplayer?

it's sounds as if you need to update the codes for your player. Normally it will try to connect to the internet and download them, is this happening or does your firewall stop it?

problems viewing with player

The windows media player I am trying to use is the one that was mentioned in the email. I still can't get it to work. I downloaded the Zoomplayer suggested and it will open but will not play the selected file for editing all I see is a black screen. I am at a loss. I don't have a clue as to what to do.

Hi

how many items have you tried to play as some will contain black screens?

I'm still not sure which version of WMP you are using, is it version 6, 7, 8, 9 or WMP Classic?

what software DVD player do you use?

Just on a little related note, if MPC (Media Player Classic) by Gabe (related to Microsoft's Windows Media Player as far as GUI etc goes) is installed, it would probably be able to playback the file, but might encounter trouble when it comes to encoding.

A suitable MPEG2 decoder can also be downloaded from the Elecard site.

Downloaded the Elecard decoder. Works ok. Will have to buy the registered version to get rid of the dancing icon though. Thanks for the help

surely there's a free method. Just install some DVD players, do they not have the decoders?

you still aint said what DVD software player you have :(

David,

A free-for-non-commercial-use player is "Zoom Player", standard edition which is
available at http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml .

I have used it successfully, among other "viewers", with DVDS as recommended by MackemX & other fellow DVDS users.

It should be an ideal, cost-free alternative to try out given your reported problems to date.

Advise results.

Zoomplayer uses the default codecs on your PC as it does not have it's own, though you can change it to use whichever you want

you could be like me and totally cripple your system during VOB testing and now zoomplayer doesn't work at all for me moaning about missing DirectX interface :(

but I'm sure I'll sort it real soon :D

Hey Mack, did you try VLC for vob testing too ?
ages ago but it opened a new version all the time, I don't know if I changed the settings and sorted it. I started using zoomplayer as you can maximise it without it having to be on top which I find is cool :D. It's also real fast to respond to new files opening

I've sorted my PC out after making a complete mess of it by eventually installing my graphics drivers as a last resort. I was just about to attempt to unistall DirectX9  . Luckily it worked and I found some interesting tools that allow you to specify which codecs have priority (that's how I broke it in the 1st place :p , by fiddling with it) as some video codecs used with zoomplayer have advantages over others ;). I didn't realise I had so many codecs on my PC but the tools are great to get rid of the crap ones (not recommend as thats what broke my PC) or put them on a lower level prority (recommended) and assign a higher value to the one you want
