Windows Media Player 9

Anyone downloaded it yet? You can get it from w!ww.windowsmedia.com, I downloaded it today and so far I think its great!

I recommend this player, its not much different GUI-wise from WMP8 which comes with XP but its a lot more stable and quicker and has a higher ratio at getting track titles and album covers from cd's etc.

Media Player 6.4 is still the best one if you have to use M$
It doesent play a lot of modern formats, and it can't be used with any OS's after Windows 98SE

Media Player Classic Version 6.4.0.2 !!! The Best !!!
h**p://vobsub.edensrising.com/mpc.php

Main features:

It has the same look as the good-old Windows Media Player 6.4 (I got used to it too much…). The only minor change is that XP- themes are now enabled.

Can play DVDs with the help of external decoder filters. The current best set of filters I can recommend are in the registered version of WinDVD 4, since its audio decoder can be set to more than 2 audio channels of output. PowerDVD is also good but lacks this important feature. You should avoid using Elecard’s filters, it is an honorable attempt to create free mpeg2/ac3 decoders, but unfortunately they can’t deal with encrypted vob files.

It can also play RealMedia files! But only after installing the RealPlayer or the newer RealOne player.

Full screen resolution, extra sharp looking subtitles, for any format which the other vobsub programs can open. Though, there are a few limitations:

It needs Windows XP (it has a new renderer filter, which makes rendering pictures over the video possible).

A fast cpu and some recent video card (anything with 16MB or more vram should be ok).

Can’t subtitle over RealMedia.

When using subtitles the rendering is done through D3D, and because of this the back buffer for composing the picture must be RGB. This means no YUV -> no overlay -> no full screen video mirroring. However, you can still use cloned desktop mode with the player window put into full screen, when you want to watch the movies on tv-out or on the secondary monitor.

Desktop size must be less then 2048x2048.

Replaceable audio, by specifying some second media file while opening. Useful for dubbed playback.

Picture zooming. Horizontal/vertical directions are independent, can be used to correct aspect ratio problems.

Playlist support: m3u, pls, asx.

Variable playback rate.

Uses the special keys of the keyboard when available, like the volume and playback controls.

No skinning. (yes, it’s a feature, at least for me who likes to know where to click :)

DirectShow filter settings are easily accessible, just like their stream selection.

yup WMP9 is garbage and basically does other things to the system that you really don't want.
6.4 works well and even 7x is bareable. 8 is kinda like adding chocolate fudge to a chocolate fudge sunday (useless) and 9 is like adding chocolate fudge to a chocolate fudge sunday with chocolate fudge LOL.
Not only that, WMP8 & up don't even handle the media they are supposed to play very well (so even free players like zoomplayer BS player and others are better).
