Windows 2000 versions

Hi there,

I've had a look around the search button topics, but don't see anything that applies. I'm going to upgrade to Win 2000.

I have a choice of versions, but I'm going to narrow it down to Win2000 Pro with SP2 or Win2000 Pro Corporate Edition.

Obviously I want the most stable OS, but I'm also worried about blacklisted serials.

Which versions do you recommend? The main programs which I use are Steinberg Wavelab and Photoshop 6.

did you mean win xp? as far as know, no win2000 corporate exists!
if want to avoid bs and micros__t games, install windows 2000.
if interested in software chase, install windows xp. make sure use disk clone software to avoid re-installing. (norton ghost, power quest drive image, etc).

winxp fun as far as keeping one step ahead. is like foxhunt. But one can get screwed if uninformed.

This is no cut down on you: If want Win XP, advise search forum.
If want Win 2000, then install it. At this point in time, spycat likes win2000. But search forum first !

Check Rastabt out. He drinks rum and is perpetually stoned on ganga. He also has good advice on this!

I think the best thing for you to do is get the win2k 3in1 with SP2 version out.
Includes:
win2k pro
win2k server
win2k advanced server
-all having SP2 integrated ofcourse.

win2K pro will do you perfectly 'cause am asuming you are not running a server (as in a big corporate one).
I like my winXP corp edition, but it isn't for most people I think and you will have far less trouble going to win2K.
Just remember it uses NTFS system (not Fat32) so all your HDD have to be made into NTFS, otherwise you can't view them while in win2k.

where does one get the 3in1 version i would like to dl it i am currently using 2k pro with sp3 but i hear it may star to cause probs so i was wondering if u can tel me a link to the 3in1 please and thank yu

Some advice

In my opinion Windows 2000 is the superior OS (I played with Linux through the middle nineties but never joined that club).

However - DO NOT INSTALL SP3!!!!

(I think I may add that to my signature...)

shadoe_phantom: can you give me some info on the NTFS format? Not quite sure what to do there. You are correct in assuming that I've no interest in a server...Win XP? maybe in a couple of years!

win2000 corporate new one on me! i stand corrected. would you believe one other time in life i thought i was wrong. but turned out to be right anyways? ha-ha! if have access to all these versions of win2000, then check one of spycat's last post here:

will be able to make own 3 in 1 win2000 cd! also with ntfs format on disk, disk defrags faster than if have fat32. ntfs a little slower maybe than f32, but is said gives better security and stability. also performance not fall off with large hard drives.

i can say ntfs not act up on own like f32 can. if like win98 or
me, search post for spycat's upload of ntfs for win98. have 1/3 terabyte of diskspace. ntfs see all way across and wants more. even nt4 does. win 98 not even boot on system. (not enough memory message). spycat have 1.5 gigs of DDR! spycat keep one small 3 gig f323 partition for norton ghost. rest is all nt format. now if think spycat like ntfs, are right!

personally, spycat like datacenter 2000 best. seems memory management better than other win2000 versions. if am right, datacenter handle up to 64 gigs of memory and 32 processors. means i have only 31 more processors to go. advanced server and pro good too, but seems if use reg cleaners, it will lose mouse cursors and sound events.



down road in future, 98, 95, nt4 no longer supported by microsh#t. and hard drives and memory increase as i write this.
seems nt format or linux only way to support these new large scale computers.

NTFS is just a type of file format similar to FAT32, only more secure. Drawbacks is that if you have any partitions with FAT, you won't be able to see them while in an NTFS OS. You can however see NTFS partitions while in FAT OS.
NTFS is best when working with large image files though (movies etc...) 'cause doesn't have the 4Gig limit that FAT has.

Not quite true m8, Win200 Pro SP2 (what I have been using for the past year) is able to read and write to FAT, FAT32 and NTFS formated HD's no problem. I have all 3 types in my own system If you a number of partitions on your HD, you can even format each partition differently as well. That all with standard Windows Format.

You then cannot see NTFS formatted HD's in Win9x. Although I believe there are some progs around that can get around this problem now.
