windows 2000 dual partition with 98??

ive just installed windows 2000 professional on my p3 450 with 256 mb sdram, with cd/dvd and 13gig.

was wonderin why, when i selected clean instal, it got into the setup and wouldnt lemme format my hdd, and made me keep 98 on one partition and create a new one for 2000.

another concern i have, is that im not sure if i wanna remove 98, not cos of files an stuff on the hdd, but because of printer sharing on my home network, until i figuree out 2000, im not sure if i wana uninstall 98.

another question is how i could uninstall or delete the 98 partition i have using 98 or 2000??? because u get the option of both in the startup screen.

any help about deleting partition or any proggies that could help me do this would be really appreciated.

thanks in advance guys an gals,

james

I think System Commander may be the answer for you. You install it and run it. Then you can install Win2k in a separate partition, and when you boot you can choose what system to boot. You can obviously transfer data from one partition to the other. If you later decide to uninstall an OS, just do it. It comes with a partition manager. You can find it at h++p://kickme.to/fosi

thanks man! i think u misunderstood me, cos i already have the dual partition, mebe thats jus me unable to explain things :s

but the link to system commander is great! thanks again borogovio!

Hi James,

Your first question: When you make a clean install, there is an option on the screen that says something like; let me decide wich partation to install on. You have to activate this option, and then you will be able to choose the partition and the option to format it.

Second learn more about win 2k and as you are more confident with it you can remove win98.

Third, you can just delete the 98 partition (if they aren't on the same partition). Make windows show you all hidden system files. On the root of the C: drive look for Bootmenu.ini, Edit it and delete the line that says windows 98 (usually only windows). On system -> Startup Recovery Settings -> set the show menu to 0 and you are done. This way is appliable if the default OS is 2k. In other words if you don't choose any thing on startup it enters 2k automatically.

If you would that all working properly, simply install before the 98, when it working install the 2000 starting from the 98 and it ask for an upgrade or for a double boot.....
Bye

wow

wow, thanks guys, i guess ill have to re-read some of that! :D

thanks for your help, im gonna do another clean 98 install, then may upgarde all that usin auto update (as it is legit) then see where i am from there with 2k, not too sure im ready to spend ages learnin about a new OS.

thanks again peeps :)

update

decided to use partition magic and format totally guys :(

what happened was, id hoped i could format over the top of the partition with 2k and 98 with windows xp (using the clean install option). unfortunately, it didnt work too well, and decided to give me 3 options on boot up -

windows 2000
windows 98
windows xp setup (as i hadnt finished - i exited)

at that point i had enough and jus formatted, an realisin i hadnt any boot disks (this is all on my other comp in case u hadnt realised :) ) so i had to trawl round, an found h**p://w*w.etplanet.com where i got the 2000, xp and 98 boot disks, and am now doin 2k install followin all the good things that have been said of 2k pro over xp pro.

thanks for all ya help, im sure ill be back soon :D

James, this is a personal comment. The first time I installed 2k was upgrading 98 SE with 2k. Bad choice, the OS was unstable as was 98SE. I would recomend a clean install rebouting from the CD. If yours is not a bootable version search on google for: "making windows 2000 bootable" and you will find many places how to make your copy a bootable one.
