win2k shutdown slowdown fix

I was having this problem and find a fix here: http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/42735.html

This problem is caused by the addition of Windows Update Hotfix Q329170 if you have SP3. Verification is seen in the event viewer "application log", the error being "usernv" "Windows cannot uload your registry file..........". It seems to be a function of the order in which SP3 and pre sp4 hotfixes are installed. Removing q329170 solves the problem, but slightly increases security risks in a business network where users could be risks. I see no problems on a home network. Curiously, Microsoft has not yet acknowledged this problem, which is reasonably widespread.

:D :p

tnx Geoff I didn't catch your post before and I did search before posting myself but didn't find your post here. Anyway, insisting may help others though (and your title wasn't specific to this problem and refers to hotfix Q329115, not Q329170 who resolved my problem. Also Q328310 has been acussed of similar misbehaviour)

This answers my question: why I have to go and have lunch while my computer is rebooting (dont laugh, its a fact and I AM using 2000 SP3). It seems that the best way to debug your Microsoft OS is leaving it as it is...

Yeah scarecrow, just don't bother trying to fix what ain't broke!

Whoops, there I go with that word "fix" again.

Sorry, I just replied to one of your posts where you mentioned that word fix........ sorry, I did it again, doh,
