Win XP Pro

I can't seem to get XP Pro to install.
It gets allmost done and pops up this message.
Missing file X:\I386\ASMS.
I've tried a clean install, booting from disk, copying to hard drive,
upgrading from win98,me,and2000.Can anyone help please?
What is that file anyway. It says it's missing but it's on the cd?

Thank's in advance

When exactly shows this message? If during the installation or copying, then try to install from another cd drive. If still this message about missing file then may have the cd constructional or burning defect.

Check cd-rom

It's most probably the cd-rom. Get another one. I had this problem twice lately. I almost threw out the computer as I had tried everything else. Give it a try, cant hurt, right?:p

The same cd was used on my main computer and had no problems at all.The computer with the problems came from Gateway if that make any difference.I'm thinking it has something to do with the hardware on that system.I'm getting a list together that's the one I keep at work. As always any help is greatly appreciated. Tkanks guys.

CD drive is hardware, and the fact that the cd is working on main computer means enought about the reading ability from your cd-drive, or about the cds healthiness! Try to install from another cd drive or to make a network installation, (if you haven´t a second cd.drive) or to copy the cd again!

Two things -

Is this a slipstreamed version of XP? I have had this problem and think it is caused by some of the files to be updated being open on the machine used for the slipstream process.

Second, the difference between your two machines is down to hardware configuration - possibly the Gateway needs a different set of mobo drivers to your main machine, which is why you don't get the "missing file" error on the other machine.

As suggested above, try a different (genuine?) copy of XP for the install.
