I have just purchased a new 40 Maxtor H/D when I try to install winxp I get error NTLDR is missing after the H/D has been formatted to NTFS..ant ideas anyone

Try Formating using a windoze startup disc to FAT 32.Then install your XP using quick format to NTFS in the install.

Are you trying to put a Ghost Image or other backup image back on your fresh harddisk?

dont format the disk with a floppy!go into the bios and put the first boot as the cd rom reboot with the xp disk in the drive and follow the instructions xp will do it all for you , thats of course that you have an xp disk albeit a hookey copy- ahem!!!!!!!!!
you can e mail me if you need any help.............................

Thanks guys for you replys, I will try this, I do have proper registered version of XP Pro.

I have tried John Baxters method and got the same result.

But I will the 'The Poachers' method and see what happens, I have installed many systems and never had this error before.

could the new drive be duff.............how about seeing if 98 will load ,you could always dual boot with xp ,im not sure if that will solve things though,is the drive 40gb,is it the master drive, sometimes being a slave drive seems to work better for some reason, you can load xp onto any old partition ,but you probably knew that

Starting with the floppy is just until U have done Fdisk & the format C with fat 32 then when U get a command line close down & reboot with your XP Cd & NTFS format when U install

It may well be that your bios is set to protect the harrdisk MBR from viruses, and so ntloader does not register into the first disk sector. Enter bios and disable the antivirus protection.

I had the exact same prob. however I tried installing Xp pro via formating the hdd with partion magic (formating to ntfs)or even with a Windoze 98 start disk (fat 32), the result came out the same. NTLDR is missing.
The ONLY and EASYEST way I found was to load WIN 98 using a WIN98 Start up disk, then upgradeing to XP, XP install will ask if you want to upgrade or do a new installation. I choose to do a new install. then it will ask what partion you would like to install XP on (unless you want to dual boot, CHOOSE THE EXISTING partion, other wise make a new partion and install on that one) Anyhow after that is said and done, now it will ask if you would like to FORMAT partion to a NTFS or leave it a fat (CHOOSE TO RE-FORMAT TO NTFS( your pc will run better)) Then XP will reboot and install automatically.
Anyway this is what I had to do. I think it is because the Xp start up disc is not really what your (or I) was looking for to install XP. And even though the Win 98 start up disk reconizes NTFS thats all it duz, you cannot install XP with that 98 start disk. Even tough you can install XP on a FAT system making you think that you could use 98 start disk to install XP.
This is just my two cents anyway hope it works out for ya. And be reminded that if you are dual booting with two HDDs the MBR(master boot record) will be written to the primary drive.

Stick to basic!!!

Format your hd,change in bios to make cd bootable, put xp in that cd drive, and setup will start--just installed xp few days ago!!!

XP Install

If you are using XP on your present drive why not simply copy all the data from the old drive to the new one, with Drive image it is a piece of cake. I have just copied the total contents of a 40gig drive to a 80 gig drive and then restarted the machine using the new 80gig drive. With drive image you can even start from a raw virgin drive no formatting, fdiskin or anything required. Copied 4 partitions over, verified in 1 hour 20 minutes.
