Win ME to XP Pro

Could someone tell me if I can install XP pro over
ME without losing any data
I'm getting a lot of conflicting advice and want to
be sure before going ahead.

The reason I ask is I want to go from fat32 to NTFS
and dont want to have to do a fresh install if its
not needed.

it's possible; you have to start the XP-setup while ME is running, then choose "Upgrade"; during the setup you have to choose "Converting FAT -> NTFS" and not formating;

but before you do that, the XP-CD contains an Upgrade-/Hardware-Check in the autorun menu; Try it!

but i would never do an upgrade, best way is always a fresh installation; save your data on CDR/CDRW or in an other partition/HDD;

wait for some hints more from other forum members; i'm not faultless;

Many of the people have had problems with WinXP, are the upgraders. It's a major problem that even M$ has acknowledged. Even they now recommend a clean install whenever possible.

So, do as was suggested, back up your important files (you should do this for safety reasons anyways), wipe the drive clean, and install WinXP.

Don't worry about needing the full XP CD, as the upgrade will ask you for proof of a previous Win OS on installation. Just swap out your WinME CD when WinXP asks and you be right! ;)

agree with what being said here.
1 of the major factors is that winME belongs to the win9X kernel.
kernel is basically the engine behind the OS system.

Now winXP is based on the winNT kernel (which are quite different). This change alone would cause some conflicts.
You may not notice any problems at the start, but eventually things will happen and you won't understand why.
1 of the other major factors here is that you are crossing not only from win9x to winNT kernels, but also going from FAT to NTFS.
Although you can change file systems while still keeping your programs, there is no guarantee they will take to it.
It may seem like a headache to wipe out your HDD (format) and reinstall everything fresh... but in the long & short run, you will have far less headaches.

Do yourself the favor and clean install. You will also get the satisfaction of knowing how to do that and knowing your system is clean from apps you don't really use anymore, etc... .

Good luck!

Ditto to all the above.

Going from FAT32 to NTFS alone is enough to make me do a fresh install on a clean drive, let alone switching from the easy-to-break 98 Kernel to the NT Kernel.

Don't get confused by the conflicting advice that you might receive elsewhere. You will be much better off to do as these great guys have said.

I did think that fresh install was the best option
but after reading your replies I have no doubts
that it is the way to go,

Thanx for all your replies guys
