I cant seem to open up any shortcuts on my desktop or even some executables on cd's or in program files. Windows keeps telling me that the files are not found but when i look in the directories they are there. problem started after removal of nortons anti virus. had a problem with install so i uninstalled it and i got rid of files it said were in quarintine. so maybe some needed windows files were in there and are now gone? any help would be greatly accepted. I have already tried re-installing OS over itself but no luck and i dont know the adminastrator password since I got this as a good working used computer.

In Win2k, most [programs can only be installed in Administrator mode and since you dont have the password, then I would suggest a format of C: drive and re-install a free working copy of Win2K.

This is the "ntpasswd" utility that uses a linux boot session to modify windows system files that hold password information. A new version has recently been released, and the above page now includes a link for a bootable ISO that can be burned to cd and used to reset passwords.
If you're going to reformat instead, why don't you at least salvage the win2k serial off the computer, since you bought it? Head to

winernals adminpakv3 has a tool 4 changing lost administrator passwords but like chickenman said u need admin rights to install it if youve got a friend who will install it and then burn the image for you should do the trick . am not allowed to post a link but google should turn up something . saves a re-install which is a pain in the ass. hope that helps
