Which one would be the better one???Pioneer DVR-A05 or Sony DRU-500A

The Sony is better because it burns both dvd-r and dvd+r. But with some careful shopping you can probably get the Pioneer (especially in rebadged form) for less than half the price of the Sony.

If you can get the Pioneer for less than half the price, I would get the Pioneer. In a couple of years you could use the other half to get something far better than the Sony is now.

@ tokki,

I recently purchased a CenDyne (Pioneer) DRV-105 with firmware 1.00 and flashed to 1.21. Using SmartRipper, DVD2one and DiscJuggler I have “Backed Up” many DVD’s.

The only problem is finding quality DVD-R blanks at a reasonable price. Using cheap crap DVD media has caused the only problems I have experienced in burning DVD’s. Reasonable quality media for both ±R and ±RW formats is a slight problem now. I believe the price of quality DVD-R blanks will become reasonable in a matter of time. When the retailers get the hint and purge their stock of all the garbage DVD media that they are attempting to sell to unsuspecting uniformed customers burning DVD’s will become as simple and as easy as burning CD-R’s.

i own a dru-500a and i would say! the Pioneer A05 would be better more reliable and more compatible with media!!!(more brands)MY A04 was better then my sony!! in my opinion.
unless you need DVD+R/RW ( which for the life of me !! i cant see why you would need it!!!(i still have the first 10 i DVD+r blanks i purchased) get the pioneer!!!
last market figures in Australia show DVD+R/RW burner make up only 16% of the total DVR market!!!!! DVD+R/RW is on its last legs!!!

pay a bit extra for DVD-R blanks!! it will save a heap of time and coasters!! Vebatim have worked best for me

If u r in the uk then dvd-r blanks are cheap.
Even 4x are not that much.
The problem at the moment is the good media is selling faster than they can make it!

The dvd+r format is being pushed in the rest of europe.

If you can find the Sony DRU-500A, it is ridiculous putting any sort of poll in forums: grab it... that simple.
The Pioneer is ages worse, regarding anything (leaving side price).

and which of the two have u owned or tested?
Giving advice on something u do not own or use is hardly good advice, is it?

Agreed with Daveml on this.I have the 105 and its worked fine for me now that I know the best media to use with it.

I have worked with both- quite a bit, so I have drown my conclusions.
I own none: I cannot find a Sony anywhere, and I would never buy the Pioneer- altough its readily available.

The Sony's are now readily available. They are now in stock in most stores in Canada.Been reading other forums, they can be had now. Some as the OEM versions, some as DW 10A?(not sure on the model#)but can be flashed as 500A.:)

I'd wait for the Lite-On to come out before I bought any new burner at this point. Almost half the price of the Sony, does 4X in both -R/+R formats, and if nothing else it will make Sony drop it's prices....or maybe not (we are talking about Sony after all)

I can´t see a big difference in quality between the sony and the pioneer.

If the multiformat feature is important for you then go for the Sony.

Hello, there!!!

I'm in canada, Pioneer A-05 Costs $400.00 CDN at Futureshop and

Sony DRU-500a costs $600.00 CDN at Futureshop and Staples.

What would you recommend????

That is a tough call. I think in 2-3 years both will be outdated by new technologies that will record much more information on a dvd blank.

I think I would bank the extra $200 cdn for a new burner when the new technologies come out but at 67% of the Sony the call is a close one.

Tough question!I bought the A05 at Futureshop(mainly because the Sony was out of stock). The $ savings was nice too.

The Sony has a faster, and better Cdr writer(24X).The A05 (16X)No good with SD2 or anything that uses bad sectors.

Dvd+r is very expensive media too,in Canada.I found some good sources for cheap dvd-r media only,so I went with the A05 because of this too.

If you are going to go with a single format type of drive then i would recomend the - format, simply because this has far out sold the + format. There is no one drive that is 100 % a winner, at the end of the day, everyone here has spoken of there own choice of drive, the pioneer is a very good and popular drive, but it all comes down to what you want to do with it, i personaly own the toshiba, my first choice was actualy the sony, but they couldnt deleaver, so i went for the toshiba simply because of its CD protections capability. If you want a drive that will do DVD and copy CD games then the tosh is the drive to go for, as it will cut through most protections(exept audio) with ease and also burn perfect copies of most protections, the sony and the pioneer struggle with this.

While the Toshiba has it's own merits,it is limited to 2X dvd-r.

The poster is limited to the 2 writers listed in the original thread.I was too!;)
