which dvd-rom

Looking for advise for a good dvd-rom for reading (ripping) when creating a backup using dvdxcopy xpress.
My pioneer 106 seems a bit slow at this process, 125 min running time took 36 minutes to complete process 1.(the rip)
I've read that burners are slower at ripping an image and that dvd-roms are much quicker 6x-8x.
What would you guys recommend for a good ripper? Liteons or Sonys etc
Could you please state the approx ripping time you get and with which dvd-rom.

Thanks
Steve.

I've had good success with the Sony DDU1621 (16x40x).
Speeds or ripping (fluctuating) 7x-16x. It mostly depends on the DVD you are ripping and sectors. The speed will drop and then pick up in some areas.
Lite-Ons are probably better, although I have only tested with my 12x Lite-on and speeds were the same (6x-12x ripping). Am sure the 16x versions are much better.
I know both are better/faster than the Pioneer 106 for reading and ripping, but if I were you, just go for the cheaper drive (Lite-On) as it is top notch and as fast or faster than all the others.

Thanks for the reply.
I bought the liteon 166s and I am very happy so far. I just ripped the same disk I did the other day and the ripping time has halved. Ripped at approx 6x.
Alot better than 3X.

Thanks again.
