Where's My New Drive???

I just got a new computer with two CD/DVD drives: the RW is a Sony +/- DWU14A. First, I should probably confess I'm not very good at these things, so what's freaking me out now is wondering if I got a drive here that won't write CDs, maybe it only does DVDs ?!!!? I was sure I'd checked that out, but it's my worst case scenario, and now I'm having trouble tracking that down (I should be able to find out from the place I got my computer next week).

Hoping that's not it ! this is what's going on: none of my CD writing software will burn an audio CD with it. I have Roxio (version 5), Intervideo WinRip (which is what came bundled) and just tried out something called NTI CD Maker (version 6). NTI just says "no supported drive detected", and they all have a problem that amounts to the same thing. The drive works fine for playing DVDs, which is all I've had time to try, but I'm really not worried about it writing them. I don't have a clue where to go from here, am hoping this is just one of those mysterious glitches, or even that I'll have to write on the more expensive DVDs *yeah, I'm desperate*!

A google didn't get me anything trying to find out about just doing audio with a DVD drive, but I'm pretty sure it does both - I do a lot of CDs, and expect to need DVDs a lot less. Hope someone here can see through this, I'm just gonna try taking some deep breaths for awhile...

Multi Thanks, Leila

hi leila,welcome ;)
some additional questions so that u we can help u further ;)
1) u r running which os?winxp win2k or win 98se?
2) do u tried the lastest burning software?using old software won't work since they won't have support 4 ur drive

disable imapi support 4 burning if u r on winxp
install forceaspi/aspi 4.60 if u don't have it
try using the latest nero 6.xx or 5.5.xx they will have support 4 ur drive..remove roxio ,it will cripple ur system ,and also nti cdmaker
hopes that may helps ;)

Thanks :) I am on XP, XP Pro (just because I got such terrible warnings from one person about plain XP LOL, I've never been networked and don't need all that)

I wondered about that software question - I don't think any of it's the latest, because *gulp* well I have a friend, uh yeah, I never buy software... except the Intervideo stuff that's bundled must be new, hmmmm, but its error messages aren't the same, and it seemed like it worked once, only the CDs were a total bust, they don't even read as having audio on them.

Thanks for the heads up about Roxio - I always had trouble with it, pretty suspicious...

Now how do I disable imapi? I'm going to check out the stuff you're recommending now - after getting this, spending is scary, but life without CDs might be worse ;)

PS Cool I just got through to tech support where I bought my baby (yeah, I name em all too :D ) and they just recommend trying Nero too - plus if it works, they'll sell it to me CHEAP ! No idea about the imapi tho, let me know if I'll have to do that.

just as explanation: if the software is older than your drive, the software cannot know your brand new toy; this means "no supported drive" in programmers language;
_ _ _ _ _

uninstall Roxio, NTI, all packet writers (Drag&Drop CD burning software), disable IMAPI and try WinRip or the glorious < Nero 5.5.10.56 > again;

check out that DMA is enabled for your drive: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=32137

use trustable branded media and don't burn audio CDs at full speed;

Now how do I disable imapi?
it's here mentioned too: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=32137

LOL that does make sense and will no doubt be comforting to remember if it happens again :rolleyes: Nero works beautifully, I didn't have to do anything except take out the other programs, but I'm going to check out your link on imapi and the rest of this, just for optimization. Not full speed you say? I can probably still be as fast as anyone would really want at half - said I was burning at 24, which I think might be lower than the drive's max, but who seriously needs that extra speed?

Roxio really is evil, incredibly hard to get rid of! There's probably something I still missed *grrrr* but I even defragmented, everything I could think of - it just kept popping up, even after I set Windows and other programs to override it. At least it LOOKS like it's gone now.

Nero definitely is the coolest CD burner I've ever seen - all this is going to be really fun when I start learning video :)
