Happy Holidays all! I recently purchased dvdxcopy platinum and have had no problems copying my dvd movies but I noticed there are many different versions of the software. Is there a best known version?
btw, this site sometimes offers student discounts, for those interested:
www.dvdxware.com.

Welcome to the forum!The version you have is good if it's working for you. ;)

This software is very controversial,some people love it,some hate it.Don't know much about it.I think basic flavour is DvdXcopy,then Express,then Gold,then Platinum.I think each flavour allows more customizing of the process of dvd backups.Maybe somebody can tell you more. ;)

As I understand it.

DVDxCopy is the original product and simply splits.
Express only transcodes; movie only or everything.
Gold = DVDxCopy and express.
Platinum = Gold, but you can leave stuff out, unwanted streams, extras, etc.

All I know is this, I've installed their software on two systems now and both times it screwed my DVD-ROM readers ability to read at it's normal speed and had to uninstall and uninstall the IDE channel too. The quality is OK but nothing more than that at the end of the day too.

IMHO you would be better off first trying DVD Shrink from:- www.dvdshrink.org/ You have nothing to lose as it's FREE. You will will usually find on most DVDR forums that the members normally rate the transcoding software as follows.

1) Pinnacle Instant Copy

2) DVD Shrink

And after testing the above and pretty much every other transcode software on over 800 DVDR's I for one cannot disagree with those findings myself.

HTH :)
