What's the difference

What is the different btwn a Lite-On 40125S and a 40125W CD-R/RW drive.

I want to buy one but I am confused. There seems to be "S" drives and "W" drives on the market. Which one should I buy?

S or W?

Thx.

I have scanned something like this

I have found something interesting which may resolve my query.

"the 32123S can not be upgraded...it is a 3 series chipset..the 5 series chipset can be upgraded..overclocked"

3-chip & 5-chip Lite-On

how do I distinguish between a 3-chip and a 5-chip Lite-On CD-R/RW?

Thx a million.

NB. I know that the 3-chip drive cannot be overclocked but the 5-chip one can. I want to get the 5-chip version.

Regards.

Perhaps you are referring to the MediaTek series 3 and series 5 chipsets that Lite-On uses?

For example:
LTR-32123S
LTR-40125S

A good tutorial on how to overclock your Lite-On, go to the cdfreaks.com forum.

Specifically look here:

I have been to cdfreaks, that is why I am confused. There are

LTR-32123S
LTR-32123W

only one of these models can be upgraded to 48xxxxW. I do not know which one though.

What is the difference between "S" and "W"??

Perhaps you are right. I should have concentrated on the "3" and the "5" instead of the "s" and "w".

Found diff. about Lite-On "S" & "W"

In short "S" drives are made in China, they r diff. from "W" drives in that some hardware components are diff. And that is why it cannot be used with EZ CD Creator Platinum 5 and some Direct CD software.

In conclusion 48125W is superior than 48125S. It is the same for all Lite-On models.

I have also copied my findings here, as shown below:

1. I phoned technical support in Netherland, I asked him if one was better than the other: He answered the hardware was slightly different, but we cannot say that one is better than the other.

2. Flashing the LTR 40125S to LTR 48125W does not work with Direct CD Platinum 5 with all the patches. It will tell you the flash went well ,but takes 33+ minutes to format a Direct CD ,while a flash of the "S" to LTR 40125W takes only around 9 minutes. So you tell me .
In my opinion the "S" stands for scrap it.I can say this because I too have a converted LTR 40125S to LTR 40125W.

4. If your original 40X is a "W" the flash to LTR48125W works just fine, but if you have the "S" version is does NOT work well with Roxio Direct CD or Nero's INCD .Don't be fooled just because the flash went off without a hitch. Programs must see this confused drive right .

Cheers.

hummmmmmmm maby a drive that does not work with easy cd cremator isnt such a bad thang !? i dunno why people still want to use that program !?
:D

i have read that the drives are almost identical and the s and w
stand for it flash memory neither is better os worse i know the s drive is made in taiwan because it says on the drive i suppose you could argue that taiwan is part of china but tell that to the taiwanese you can if you want change firmware over to the w and vice versaso i have read nay way i like liteon drives hope this answers your question

Im running an "S" model and mine is made in China. I dont plan on overclocking cause it already writes faster than I need it to. Ill stick with my "S" version firm and lower write speeds...works better that way with Clone anyways, in my experience. :D

iv since found out the differece chipsets slightly different other than that same mines made in taiwan iv flashed to the latest firmware something 05 anyway works a charm fastest drive iv ever used no errors yet although i havent tried 99 minute disks
yet id recommend liteon drives

A few others to chew on:
32123S - a 32x writer using the Mediatek "3" chipset - thought to be non-overclocable, untile the appearance of an OEM version 40125S using the "3" series chipset - this oddity cannot itself be overclocked, or re-firmwared as any other model.

Until then, and until the points above, it was thought that ONLY the supposed chipset number (3, 5, 6) mattered, and that the S/W of those were basically interchangeable!

Interesting!

Just curious...how do you find out all of this detailed/extensive information about a drive? I am interested in knowing what chips are in my drives and just a little more info than what Infotool delivers...
