I am just starting to look into backing up my DVDS and converting my old VHS tape. I have windows XP with a DVD playing and CD recorder (seperate units) on my PC.

Can I back up my DVDs with my current hardware?

how do I get started, remember Im just starting and dont know squat about recording DVDs

Thanks
Marty

ok cool, I ll give this a try, one question, once you have information you want (just the movie) and not all the "EXTRA" stuff, will a complete movie fit on one CDR?

You can, but the quality suffers.
Generally one CDR can hold 40 minutes of reasonable quality SVCD, an hour at the most, otherwise it's not worth watching.
If you have any video that runs over 110 minutes, I suggest you put it on 3 cdr's (or even 4 if it's high motion/detail).
