I am a newbie to the world of VCD/SVCD burning. Please can someone advice on what is the best res for SVCD and what is best for VCD. I have burned a few movies with nero and the quaility is pretty crappy. Please Help

well there is only 1 standard for each.
If you have a look at the tutorials you will notice how they have to be set (at least if you want to make compliant VCD/SVCD).
Now to play them on your PC is something else entirely. Generally it is the players fault that doesn't give as good a picture. All VCDs and SVCDs will look much better on your TV from a standalone VCD/SVCD player (or DVD player that plays them).

If your used Nero to do the encoding for you to make your VCD's then yes, the result is crappy.
