What processor do i buy

i seen Athlon XP 2400 oem for $200 & Pentium 4 2.4GHz 533MHz retail for $200. which do i buy? the Pentium is faster i think. i don't want to spend more than a few dollars over 200.. . ... .

I'm not sure if the P4 has been updated with additional features such as larger cache or internal redesign but when I got my Athlon XP they were quicker than a similar numbered P4.

From benchmarks in the reviews with a XP1800+ I was expecting a similar performance to a P4 2Gig.

Mind you if you were wanting to overclock I think the P4 has a better chance of being overclocked to a higher level than the XP+

One that fits your motherboard!!

If your'e starting from scratch, it's not such a problem, but if you're upgrading on the same board, you don't have a choice - not like the days of Socket 7 CPU's!

The price of the motherboard needs to be factored in, and there's probably cheaper motherboards to take the AMD than the Intel!

Anybody know the difference between Pentium 4 2.40b GHz & a Pentium 4 2.40a GHz? which is better?

The 'B' suffix relates to the the new 133Mhz FSB Quad Pumped Bus (533Mhz)it is also built on the Northwood core based on 0.13 micron technology and has 512KB of L2 cache.
Basicaly the Pentium 4 2.40b has a higher frontside bus (533)than the Pentium 4 2.40a(400) and is also based on the smaller die size

Supported CPU's
h**p://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bg2/bg2_proc.htm

Given the faster bus - if you have DDR266 RAM to support it, the "B" version will have a memory speed advantage over the "A"

Do you need TWO identical DIMMs fitted, to reach 533 Quad-pumped?

Remember those days that talking about AMD was rubish, well that days are gone. I was a Pentium fanatica till the Athlon was cheapest and there was no performance diference. Nowadays Pentium staff realize about that and prices are similar. So I think it's a matter of choices and a good combination betwen motherboard, micro and the kind of memory (DDR or better) to choose.

Good choise, good luck

f**k that XP keygen dont work.
it wont activate I have Windows XP home +SP1,f**k..... anybody have a crack.
guess im going back to win98se for awhile if i cant get this thing activated within 3 days.
anybody please help

got to go

Search for reset5 in the forum - though it seems to be a 30 day timeout preventer, not a full crack - I'm still on 98 so I can't say more than I've seen.

P4 versus AMD

If you choose a amd proc, you choose automaticly a via chipset. If you choose a P4 proc, you choose a intel based chipset. The later via chipset's are better than before, but in my opinion the intel based chipset's have the upperhand, because the motherboard's with those chipset's are proven more stable than the via based motherboard's. The via driver's will cause still more problems than those from intel. Most people who choose for a amd setup, choosing it mostly because of the price's. But with a P4 2.4b ghz setup with PC2700 ram you choose for a setup with speed and not much trouble, if you look into the pricewatch than you can get it for a afordable price. If you want to overclock your proc than will you discover that you get more out of the P4 than from the amd. Merely because the amd is already overclocked. Well, may the force be with you to make a wise decision.

ppl, let's look at the cold hard facts.

money. if you've got it go the intel route... if you want great (if not better!) performance go the amd route - the plus side of this is you still have some money left for extra goodies, like a decent graphics card!!

in my experience, epox motherboards are the best for amd processors, i've pretty much used everything from el-cheapo gigabyte to msi, and asus.

sometime or another those mobo's have failed, but never the epox.

And there is Still One other Rout that lets you use the Intel Motherboard and still have a Affordable Prosessor and be able to Upgrade to a p-4 in the future..Which is the Intel Celeron..They are cheaper than the Athlon and Pentium but use the same hardware as the Pentium with Fairly good clock speds for the Buck..My 1.7GHZ 400MHZ-FSB Celeron does a Pretty good job and goes for less than $100US..and In Benchmarks with Sisandra it beats a 1.6GHZ p-4...and I can upgrade the Prossesor to a P-4 2.4GHZ without changeing the Motherboard when I have more cash...just another choice to consider if you are really short on Cash...good luck...

AMD is King

I've owned them all. Intel, Cyrix, Texas Instruments, AMD. AMD is king. Remember, they used to make chips for Intel (under contract). The only series of chips that I did not like from AMD was their 386 comparable line. But the Athlon chips are amazing! I currently have 2 Athlon 1600+'s.
