Thanks for the word of caution, celtic_druid... I had read elsewhere that not only was it a longer task in transcoding a video by converting color palletes (going YV12 to RBG24 back to YV12), but it also doesn't produce as good results.
So, if I am to understand you correctly, it is better to use a codec's internal "filters" (ways of changing the original video, such as cropping, interlacing, brightness/contrast, etc.) than it is to use VirtualDub or AVIsynch filters? I suppose that makes sense, since the codec creators already know how their adjustments work on their own codec. I suppose the only reason why one would want to use VirtualDub or AVIsynch filters is if you desire a particular change but the codec you're converting/transcoding to doesn't support those changes.
Is that a correct assessment?...
