I just went searching on some information and found those quotes:

From CDFREAKS

Personally I think it won't be a big break, because you'll need another writer to be able to use these cd's. If I had to choose between these cd's and dvd, I'd surely go for dvd.
He is just talking about the writer, what about the readers?

Yes they are compatible. The data on these disks is just more pushed together. Proper drives should be able to read this when they comply with the standards
But this makes me believe other wise:

From CNN.com

To double the capacity, Sony made some modifications to the current CD format, of which it was one of the original developers. The modifications included a smaller track pitch and minimum track length, a change in the error correction system, and an expanded address format.
If you modify the track pitch and length, if 'm not mistaken, this mean you have to calibrate the lens to read this. This can be done with firmware, but still we have to see if mechanically this can be done by the drive. Another thing are the home sound systems and the car sound systems (no firmware). I don't think many people will be willing to change their systems only for this the double density that costs around $3 (a 700 can be buyed nowadays for less than $1). I see a good thing in this DD CD and is for the VCD. Instead of two CD's you use only one.

Apart from this, the following thing makes me doubt:

The new format also includes a copyright control system to prevent illegal copying of data on the discs.
This is not attractive and I don't believe many peolpe will like this, so I don't see IMHO a long life for this new format. I see this as pressure from the RIAA to control again a bit more what we Burn.

Well, as i believe, everyone is free to choose and make their choices.
