What happened to my CDs

I have just installed a DVD+/-RW CD R CD RW drive.
I have also installed NERO v5.

As I had a spare slot I left my original CD RW drive where it was as I thought it might be useful for copying CDs etc.

My most painful problem at this moment is that I cannot drag and drop files onto any of the CDs which where used before I made all these changes.

Help! Why is this?

You say Drag and drop - do you mean they were a drive letter before, and if so, under which software?
And is it CD-R or CD-RW (rewriteable) media

If you have changed from (as drive letter) DirectCD (which does handle packet format on CD-R media) to InCD (which does not), then you will not be able to use packet formatting on CD-R.

If you are moving CD-RW media from one drive to another, it mnay require a different speed of media.

What was the previous drive and software, and what is the new drive?
If you've installed Nero bundle for the new drive, it will not support the other drive.

I've probably missed a few things, but we need to get a handle on exactly what we're looking at.

Thank you for your prompt reply

Presumably I was using the software which comes with Win XP for writing to CD-R and CD-RW. I never had to investigate thsi as it always worked either from drag and drop or from Send to CD. My CD-RW drive was shown as a drive.

I would really like to be able to work as before on CDs - I don't mind learning new tricks for DVDs.

I did think that my new DVD drive would cover all my needs for CDs both future and past as well as DVDs. I always live in hope.

Wimdows XP's built-in makes a multisession CD - the dropped items are cached and written as a session.

To continue that in Nero 5 (Classic), you would choose the Wizard mode, Data CD, CONTINUE MULTISESSION.
Be SURE to present the CD when required, as if it doesn't import the previous session, what was on the CD will be lost/hidden (recoverable, but a bit of a pain to do it).
Express mode should take you through a similar procedure, if that's all the bundle offers ... I've never used Express, as I prefer the Classic layout.

Nero may have disabled, or is conflicting with, the XP built in - in fact for most other programs, you are advised to turn off XP's built in writing, as few other writing programs get on well with it.

If you have installed inCD together with Nero, then the Imapi (native XP) burning engine should be now disabled. inCD is certainly better than Imapi, although it can burn to rewritable media only.

I am not sure what you mean by better.
I think I would prefer to have my Imapi back as it is just OK for my needs. However I have tried uninstalling inCD and it causes me all sort of problems - thank goodness for XP system restore. But I always get it back of course when I go back.

I have found the whole business of using this DVD+/-RW CD R CD RW drive a complete waste of time and energy so far.

I am going to try and uninstall inCD again - this time with my fingers crossed. It is too early in the day to turn to the Whisky but on secnd thoughts ..........................

Thanks - I need to sit back and decide where to go next and how to get there as quickly as possible.
