What Audio editing software to use?

Hello
well im a n00b at the whole audio editing lark so my question is my friend wants some of his music from his band edited (cut down, bits taken out) and so its which software to use considering i have no real previous teaching and so it needs to be relatively simple. But i am willing to learn so if there is a e-book /manual which i could read and learn to use the software it would be great. Any suggestions?
