Remember, the human race has already hunted species to extinction and near extinction - you have to expect that we WILL mine out resources until the end is actually in sight, and then fight each other for what's left.
As they say, what WILL fill the gap? Nuclear is, quite rightly, out of favour due to the threats from accident, waste, and lifecycle costs of construction and decomissioning.
The promise of fusion, may never be more than a promise - though it would be better than current nuclear if they ever get anywhere.
Most alternatives can't be relied on, though implementing alternative power sources NOW where they can contribute, would delay the inevitable.
