Welcome to my DVD burning nightmare!

I remember that my first CD burner took ages to burn and produced copious drinks mats! Well I now have a DVD burner and it is all happening again, except the drink mats cost a lot more! Help!

Firstly, the kit. My PC has AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Processor, ASUS A7N8X nForce2 Deluxe Mainboard, 1024Mb (2 x 512MB) PC2700 DDR-Memory (333 MHZ), 200GB Ultra Fast (7200rpm) Hard Drive with 8MB Buffer, 48x CD Re-Writer & 16x DVD-ROM Drive (Combo) and SONY DVD Multi Burner (R/W all standard formats).

I have Pinnacle Studio 8 to manipulate video imagery, Nero CD burner and also Roxio’s CD and DVD Creator 6 (because I like the CD “slideshow” maker and hope to do slideshows playable on my TV’s DVD player). I am experiencing various problems and so far have been unable to burn any DVD though as I’ve said I have written-off many! I have managed to produce a DVD image on my hard disc that is “ready to go”; I have done this in Pinnacle Studio 8. The particular problems experienced are as follows:

1. Pinnacle Studio 8 will render, compile and then error the burn process when trying to burn to DVD.
2. The Sony DVD burner will record CDs OK but not DVDs.
3. The Nero and the Roxio will error the burn process also.
4. After I installed the Roxio the Pinnacle Studio 8 software could no longer see the Sony DVD burner, nor could I find any way of directing it to the Sony unit. The only way I have found to get over this is to uninstall the Roxio then the Studio 8 and then reinstall studio 8. Ludicrous!

So my questions are:

1. Is there any way you can check to see if the Sony burner is operating OK and not just via the Control Panel, can you check it to see if it can read and write DVDs OK, the buffer is OK, temporary files are in the correct place etc? If so how?
2. Is there any way of avoiding another programme (Roxio) “robbing” other packages (Studio 8) from seeing the burner.
3. Any bright ideas concerning what I might be doing wrong?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Mark G

1. Pinnacle Studio should have no problems with the Sony if you have installed the last program update.
2. Certainly: uninstalling it, you have lots to gain and virtually nothing to lose.
3. You have installed too many different mastering programs- and those three don't even uninstall properly, you have to do some manual cleaning.

Most of us here don't really recommend installin Easy CD Kremator on a system, it has always been notorious 4 screwin up other burnin software, the reason 4 that is cause it drivers are loaded all the time & not just when U use the prog so it conflicts with the others

Like scarecrow says U will have 2 do some manual editin 2 get rid of it completely, then reinstall Pinnacle Studio & then nero (but i would stay away from nero 6 the now, it a new version & is known 2 be buggy as hell the now

next step?

Thanks guys for your help. I've just tried to use Nero but have found it has a pre-coaster production check whick means I test only and don't destroy another disc. Progress!

Next step was to try this out. It didn't work and gave me the following error report (only the last part attached). Does it give you guys any idea of what I'm doing wrong?!

nero

i never could get nero and eazy cd creator to work together try unistalling one and try it see if it works .i am having problems with nero 6.009 and dvdxcopyexpress 3.0 and 3.1 wont work with it went back to nero 6.000 and no problems anyway thats my to cents hope it works

ADPU160M.sys which is active is a device driver for the ADAPTEC Ultra 160 model 29160 SCSI card, which you don't mention anywhere being present.
Does the above log really belong to your configuration, or not?
Notice also that you are trying to burn logged in as a user who does NOT have premissions to use the CD-ROM devices!
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Currentversion\Winlogon\AllocateCDRoms=1,1 should be the right registry value, in your case it is set to 0 (no permission)...

In short- you seem to have messed up horribly. Maybe not yourself, but a crappy "extra security" utility you have installed. Set your security settings to Windows default, and try again.

wow did u say (My PC has AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Processor)...shows how behind the times I am I thought fastest was a 2800..

My tuppence worth
I had very similar problem burning with lots of apps so I changed the ribbon cables linkin the drives and all was ok again, It turned out that the pulling in and out of the connector had dislodged the pins that go through the cable

well the first mistake you made was buying the SONY, i have a DRU-500A and it give me hell every now and then, anyways, when i used studio 8 it used to start burning the DVD-R then it would never STOP!!! it would be finished but the process would not complete , if that makes any sence, but i would restart or cancel it (caus it cant take 2 hours to burn a DVD , im thinking) and the actual DVD copie worked fine!!, i guess you have tried uninstalling and reinstalling studio 8, and you did put(or download) the update for studio 8 ,, right??? well if you have put the latest firmware in the dvd!!??? i dont know, but i do suggest you use record now, and nero!!! if you do that you have the same setup as me(studio 8,sony burner, nero and record now + latest firmware) and mine works fine!! sell the sony and get a pioneer is my advice, or do Format harry, and see if that works, i know last resort but , if i cant figure out after checking everything 10 times over with someone else also checking it!!! its time for FORMAT!!!

by the way you have a mean rig!! how long does it take you to render say a 30 Min. full quality DV capture!!?

It is not the fault of the dvd burner as i have a pioneer 105 and when i use studio 8 i get the same fault, the operation does not complete but the dvd is fine to use

i know the DVD not completing is not the DVDs fault , but he has a lot more problems then that, im just saying my Sony spits out shit 4x burns, some blank media dont work in it, but everything works fine on my Pioneer..
there has to be something wrong somewhere for this poor guy, wheather his OS is buggy or has a virus, cant imagine it the studio 8 if he has uninstalled the installed again, could be the burner, presuming everything is set up right

dvd session not ending in Nero 6! Help!

It sounds like DVD had the same issue im going through.

Here is what I am using:

Nero 6.0.0.0

dvd shrink 2.3

Ritek 4x dvd -r media

Everything was working great for me to backup my dvd's up until 2 weeks ago. Now when I try and burn my dvd, the session will not end! But after rebooting the dvd will work fine! I have reloading my whole system and started from scratch and it is still doing that.

Could a firmware update be the answer? I see that there is one out there for the Sony dru 500a, but just have not run it yet? Is my version of Nero ok? Like I said before, everything was working fabulous, now its crap! CRAP I tells ya! Any help on what to do would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Sony DRU-500a, and I'm still waiting for a coaster after 600+ burns (including some utterly crappy media). It may be a bad burner piece, or it may also be a bad burner user... both can be found rather easily- but the burner itself is simply superb... I have used just RecordNow Max/DX, Alcohol 120% and NovaBackup for burning DVD's with it under windows, and currently K3B under Linux- NOTHING else, and I don't regret a bit.
