weird sound "thing"

Now everybody, please don't mock me after reading this. ;)

I bought my first dvd recorder about two weeks ago for making back-ups. The hard disks were full, mainly with episodes of tv series.
I noticed a strange thing with the sound quality. At the beginning of the disks the sound is duller, darker (less brightness) and less well-defined than the original. At the end of the disks the sound is brighter and harsher than the original. There even is good old, bloody annoying sibilance.

This happened with 2 different dvd brands and two different programs.
The burner is a NEC.
HOW is this possible?

what programs are you using !?

it may be that its using MORE COMPRESSION at the beginning and end of a disk where the credits usually are !?

I don't know about my ears, but the loudspeakers are all right, a pair of Magnepan MG 12. Very nice :D

There are multiple episodes on each disk and they were all made the same way. There should be no (big) difference between them and yet the ones at the beginning of the disk sound differently than the ones at the end.
Ah well, just accept it is the best thing probably. Otherwise I'll just be wasting more disks than I accidentally did already. Yes, I know what I'm doing.
