*warning**do Not Buy The Sony Dr510a Writer For The Time Being**

Hi guys

I just bought my second Sony DR510A Writer today it lasted 2 hours, the first time it last a few days. They both had the same problems, it threw a error message whilst burning and basically stopped working with the light flashing. I contacted Sony UK today and they said that they are aware of this problem and it is a hardware fault and will fix if i want to return it to them. Well i will be returning mine to the shop i bought it from tomorrow. So if there any peeps out there thinking of buying one (UK) i would wait until they sort the problem out!

I have had the same problems, after 2 days, the dru-510a stopped working with flashing light, even after reboot, even in another computer.
I have now a new one. Hopely the new firmware 1.Oc will improve the working of this writer (firmware update : http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru510adwn.htm)

On the follewing page there you can find a program to test sony drives.
http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/diagnostics.htm

None of the 2 drives i used sofar did pass the test, olthough i can write dvd at this moment. May i ask other DRU-510A users to try this and share their results here.
Thanks

Mine has now lasted 2 weeks.... Only just this minute gone t*ts....
Same problem, Unit 'reset' itself during 1% of burn using nero, now recognised as 'Sony boot DRU510a' in properties and flashing panel light....
This really hasn't put any confidence in me about Sony. For £250 you'd expect a quality product!!
hope they dont take long to fix.... :(

If you really want sony, i would give this one back and opt for a 500A, its not much of a difference, or go for the new pioneer one

I know m8, but the stuff its burn't so far has been good.... I'll hang on to the rails of the sinking ship for a bit longer.... Did you find out if it was a bad batch, firmware, version?

Ohh bugger.... its 5.47 in the morning, did the firmware update on my new burner...... bloody thing only works in PIO mode now..... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....... Ive tried everything for windows to register it as ultra DMA.... Even tried re-flashing it..... time to talk to sony I think.

I'm starting to wish I had m8. Although every cd & dvd I've burn't so far have been excellent, 'specially dvd's, no blocking and good chapter transition, (using bulkpaq).

I had to reinstall the IDE bus controller & secondary IDE Channel driver.... now getting ready to burn again.... I'll give results l8r

This has happened to me too, I got around it by uninstalling the Secondary IDE channel in hardware properties, using windows XP, and it re-installed on bootup with no probs. Try it, shouldn't harm your system and less risky than re-flashing your drive.
